I'm 14 going on 15 and I'm way out of shape how can I get in shape and stay motivated?
|
So I'm 14 going on 15 and I'm really out of shape I've tried getting back into shape but I just can't stay motivated. I have big stomach and "man boobs" I would love to lose that i also have pretty big legs and I want to get rid of all of it. But not only do I want to get in shape and lose fat I want to get stronger but not like a body builder or anything. Do any of you guys have workouts that work good and are easy to do and can be done without a weight bench or any equipment? Would it be worth it to get a gym membership? Have any of you guys used a Bowflex and liked it or would that be worth it? If any of you guys have kinda gone through the same thing what were your workout plans and what did you eat and how did you make yourself not eat other junk foods that hold you back from getting in shape?
I know thats a lot of questions but I would greatly appreciate any answers that come back thanks a bunch!
I'm about 5'10 and like 230-250 pounds.

Losing weight is basic math, if you burn more calories than you consume then you lose weight, you eat more calories than you burn you gain it.
For an young man trying to lose weight and build up his body tone you need to combine light proteins like chicken breast, fish, or lean steak with lots of steamed veggies and salads (no ranch or caesar, stick to vinagrettes), or stir fries, cut out all white flours (no potatoe), if you want rice or pasta or bread you have to stick to whole wheat ones and you shouldn't have more than two servings a day. For snacks you have to get in the habit of grabbing an apple or other fruit or a light yoghurt or a diet bar. Finally you can not have any soda, not even diet ones because while they don't have any calories the fake sugar can screw up your metabolism and contributes to the belly pooch man boob thing (I have these skinny 115lb friends and they have these little belly pooches and it's like you drink diet coke like it's water what do you expect, get of the fakesugar juice). Basically you can have water, low fat milk, and 100% juice. period. But you're a guy so you're lucky cause guys can eat a lot more that girls on a diet, ie you can actually eat red meat instead of living off fish.
The cheapest way to lose weight is take a long brisk walk each day or a bike ride (all you need is some good sneakers), as your strength increases jog for five minutes and then walk again five and repeat (interval training). For an all over slim down/tone up the best exercise is swimming laps, and while it can suck getting in the bathing suit if you're big it really is the quickest way to lose weight all over and then also get an aerobic workout. If you work at it you can lose about 10 pounds a month and a tall guy like you shouldn't have to lose more than 50lbs tops, probably 170-180 would be a good goal, once you buff up a little you'll be fine.

You need to really think positive and try your hardest to stay motivated! think of things like getting new, hot girl to notice you! You need to run! You should run as much as you possibly can! Do exercises like jumping jacks, crunches, push-ups, chin-ups, sit-ups, and run sprints. You also need to REALLY watch what you eat. Eat as many fruits and vegetables as you can. Try to look at the fats and calories in foods before you eat them. Eat main meals (3 a day) and try not to snack on unhealthy foods. Snack on an apple or something! Drink water instead of soft drinks! You need to change your lifestyle, don't just do this for a little while, but make it to where you know nothing else! Stick with it! Make sure you exercise every day!! You'll feel great when you lose some weight! You might consider going out for a sport if you don't play one already! (football, lacrosse, soccer, basketball, track or cross-country) And then, you can start building muscle. I would advise going to a gym and get someone to help you do the right weights and how to build yourself up!
** Stay Positive! You got this!

I know exactly how you feel -- at your age I was 5'1" and weighed like 156. I was always the fat girl. I even quit ballet, which I loved, because of that. Now, at 19, I'm 5'3", a martial artist, and at a much healthier 130lbs. So...
You have to take it slowly... You should only lose about a pound or two each week, at most. How to:
First thing I did was stop drinking soda and eating junk. This is kind of hard, but you just have to find stuff that still tastes good and swap. I like fat-free milk, sugar-free iced tea and fruit and yogurt. Switch from sugary cereal to Cheerios, which are surprisingly tasty and healthy (Honey-Nut kind). Eating salads is really good, and there's some new spray-on dressings by Wishbone that taste really good and have almost no calories, so you could try that. You can stick to eating healthy if you eat tasty.
Second, I started to excercise a lot. I joined a gym and started doing free weights, Pilates and Spinning, and it was great because even though I was really sore sometimes, I started to lose weight and tone up really fast. Just get active, as much as you can -- even walking is good.
In your case, I'd recommend going from walking to running - it'll tone up your legs and help you lose fat all over. (And if you go to a park, it's free). Old school excercises like crunches and push ups (in that order) are also really good.
Martial arts, or boxing, are also really great - you get a cardio+strength workout in one, and new abilities to boot.
Third, because of the excercise, I started to drink a lot of water all the time. This helps because it cleans your body and you don't feel as hungry (so you eat less crap).

well when i started losing my weight i was 5'6 187.. i started simply drinking water and diet cokes instead of regular coke. I also jog 2 miles with my dad 4 times a week. i am now 5'8 145 and this is what I did. some tips i have for you is eat a healthier cereal, personally i like special K. also dont eat alot after 8 pm. the calories can not be burned when you are sleeping. Try to keep it to 3 meals a day with a good sized snack in between lunch and dinner. Good Luck!

i'm 16 and i had that same problem , but i figured out that if i just ran 3 times a day for like a mile or a half , ill burn more calories then i'll take in. at first it sounds like it will be hard so just start by running 1/2 a mile if you can and if you cant just Jog, Run,and Walk all that you can, and then when you can do a 1/2 mile running start on a 1/2 mile two times a day and work your way up.

I really like sparkpeople.com
It's free. It helps you track your calories (calories are what matters when it comes to loosing weight), and your excersize.
It suggests some really good meal ideas (probably not useful unless you buy your own groceries, or can talk the family into following it with you), and has excersize suggestions.
You can join groups of people on there that share your interests (there are hundreds of different groups, even one for chocolate/peanut butter lovers!), which helps with motivation.
Also, find a "buddy"..someone who will encourage you, and who will work out with you. I have noticed that I am far more likely to hit the gym if my buddy goes with me, then I am to go by myself.

Diet doesn't really matter, just try not to over eat. If you don't have any equipment, just substitute it with something else.
Be active.
If you live in the country or somewhere where there's logs, just use those, if you're strong enough.
Also, I do pushups on to 2x4's I buried in the ground, better pushups and you can't cheat 'cause your stomach is about a foot off the ground.

First off make your goals realistic and easy to obtain so you won't give up by getting frustrated.
Example- week one stop drinking all sugar added drinks and substitute bottled water and fruit juices instead...then add....
next week cut out all sugar laden snacks, eat at least one fruit a day.then add.....next week no second portions at meals....
next week only eat 3 square meals a day, eat only fruits or veggies in between meals...then add....
walking at least 30 minutes a day briskly . This is just an example- you and only you already know which foods you eat the most of already and are not good for you, gradually reduce the 'bad' foods.
Weigh yourself weekly and go with a goal of 2-3 lbs per week -reward yourself for your accomplishments ! Good luck.

There are a ton of things you can do with out gym equipment that will give you very good results. Being 15 I would stay away from lifting weights anyways since it is not good for your bones and joints at that age.
You can run, do push ups, bike, swim, do crunches, jumping jacks, wind sprints, walk, lunges, squats, cherry pickers, elbows and toes just to name a few things. If you build a program of these things around running / walking you will see good results. Also remember to eat small portions of foods that are good for you.
A sample program for you would be: Brisk walk 3 mins, run 3 mins, jumping jacks (or anything else from above for 3 mins) then repeat over an hour. You can mix up what you want to do and build your self up so you can eventually run longer.
Good luck and stick with what ever you choose.

Well to lose weight, you have to do cardio, weights and a bowflex will give you muscle, but running will lose you the stomach. Try running 3x per week for 30mins and just keep it up. Then in maybe 2 or 3 months when you are more in shape you can do weights without hurting yourself, do what i call body weights, pushups, situps, etc.. etc.... there are a million ways to get stronger with just using a mat. I lost weight by starting to train hard for a sport all you need is people expecting you to show up to workout, a shedule and people to workout with. That kept me motivated. What I do is write everything I eat in a food log, not to make me feel bad if I eat junk food, but just so I can see oh wow I ate 5 'extras" today, better eat less tomorrow or whatever
good luck

alright bro, i can relate. when i graduated high school i was around 230 lbs....i'm 6' tall but i was still "chunky". what you gotta do is make a whole lifestyle change. i lost around 30 lbs in one year, and now i'm down around 190 and a lot happier with myself. i'll talk about what you should do with your diet and exercise.
diet:
the big thing you hear about with diets are "fad diets" like the atkins, high protein, etc. these diets have low success rates and are pretty dumb soundin to me. what really matters at the end of the day isn't how much meat u ate and how much bread you didn't eat, it's simply how many calories did you consume? vs. how many calories did u burn? if u weigh 230-250 u are probably on a pretty unhealthy diet, so first off u should try to cut the junk out of your diet and try to monitor how many calories you are consuming. 1 trick of the trade that i found especially helpful for losing weight is drinking a lot of water. it will keep your metabolism at full fire (burning more calories) and it will make you feel more full. so before every meal try to drink 2 big glasses of water (or at least 1) before you eat anything. then continue to drink multiple glasses of water through your meal. i find myself drinking 5 or 6 glasses altogether sometimes! it seriously works!! (side note: when u feel hungry, you're body is not only craving food, but water as well. most people eat more food than they should and not enough water...thus becoming thirsty an hour or so after eating!)
exercise:
the biggest thing you have to do is RUN. start by going as far as you can. if you can make a mile it would be great. it will hurt. if its hurts really really bad just quit jogging and start walking until you get your breath back. just don't stop moving. thats how i started, running at least 3 times a weeks for a mile....then i moved up to 2 miles, then 3, and this last summer i was runnin 5 miles sometimes. when you run, u burn HUNDREDS of calories (you can look up calorie burning calculators through google. they're pretty cool). also, to build muscle i would recommend goin in the high school weightroom with a buddy who is familiar with working out. just tell him u wanna start working out with him and try to get in there as much as you can. if thats not appealing, you could do pushups. they'r simple enough. try to do 3 sets of 10 maybe if you can? move to 15 reps, then 20 if you can. u gotta push yourself and it will hurt. the best part about exercise is it makes you feel good about yourself. at the end of the day you'll be glad you did it and if u do it regularly you will find yourself losing weight and shaping up.
final word: u r young yet but u r in defining years for your body's growth. try doing that water trick i said, it will work because its just math and its true! (2 glasses of water is a lot in your belly and its 0 calories!). push yourself when you exercise. it's sometimes hard to motivate yourself when dieting and exercising, but what i do is think about 1. how much better you will look in the future and 2. the health benefits of proper dieting and exercising.
p.s. theres a lot of people who go into little fads of exercising and dieting properly for a week or maybe even a month but then they stop and go back to their old ways. don't be another one of those people. ur body is 100% in your control so take care of it cuz you only get 1. good luck bro, stick with it.

I'm 15 and trying to lose about 30 pounds. I've lost about 15 so far on the Atkins diet. It is not the healthiest diet and it is true that diets don't always work and they are a pain to stick to but they pay off. Atkins is low carb and you start out eating only 20 carbs a day then after two weeks you can add more on. It is a fast way to lose weight. to keep yourself motivated, think about the compliments you will get, think about how good you will feel, and just stay out of the kitchen! That is important and heck yeah it is def. hard haha, but just MAKE yourself do it. About the junk food, after a couple days you'll get used to it and have your family cheer you on or even have one of them do it with you. it makes it a whole lot easier with an accountablility partner. :)) hope you make it :) God Bless

don't do diets... they don't work and if they do that person is lucky.
Eat small meals, like 7 of them a day. If ur hungry in between don't go for the chips, but try a cheese stick or trail mix ( 1/2 c cherrios, 1/4 c of m&ms 1/4 c rasins) Exercise EVEYDAY!!! Alternate from cardio ( running, jogging, walking whatever makes ur heart beat faster ) to weights. start off with sometime like 10-15 lbs and SLOWLY increse. ur not going to build muscle if u lift 50lb only twice, u get better results doing 10lbs 30-40xs. if its a crappy day, run up and down the stairs for 5 min, then 30 sec rest. then jump rope 2 min then rest . keep doing this for like 20 min. THATS ALL IT TAKES!! for motivation, do something like, " FOR EVERYDAY THAT I EXERCISE, I WILL GIVE MY PARENTS 1 DOLLAR TO SAVE. AFTER U GET UP TO 30 OR 50 DAYS OF EXERCISING = 30-50 $$ UR PARENTS CAN GIVE U THAT MONEY TO SPEND ON ANYTHING U WANT. put limits on tv and videogames. if u can't resist, while watching tv, do some push ups or curl ups or yoga. pretty soon ur going to loose that weight. don't get discouraged though if u don't see admidiate results. MUSCLE WEIGHTS MORE THAN FAT!!!! walk home from school, don't take a bus or get a ride. REMEMBER: eat well, exercie daily and be happy!

For now since you want to lose the fat i would say run a mile 3 times a week. For diet, id say go on weight watchers, my cousin is on it and she losta lot of weight. If you want you could get a gym membership, if you want to use any special type of equiptment. A bowflex would be good after you lose the weihgt you want to since you want to get stronger. And to not eat junk food you can buy 100 calorie snacks they have them for cookies, chips, anything.

Get Active. Like Now! Join the YMCA or go swim or get into sports or somthing. Nothing else, just go walk steadily for 45 minues a day every day. Pace yourself, but see if you can get a little farther each time you walk. Cut out the junk food. It's not what you eat as much as how much you eat. You can eat as much salads and veggies as you want as long as you don't go overboard with the dressings. You can also get protein shakes. As long as you're exercising, it takes fat to digest proteins. Forget the raw eggs, though, because they suck. If you want to stay motivated, just remember this: No girl ever says,"There goes that fat guy. Isn't his chesticles just dreamy?"

Working out is great, but you also need to address the way you eat.
Don't think of it as a diet, though, that is a sure way to fail. Pay attention to fats and calories, and let yourself have a "goodie" sometimes, maybe as a reward - trying to deny yourself completely usually results in overindulgence, and you end up back at square one. Just eliminating soda can make a big difference. I love chocolate, that was the worst for me, but I found that 3 musketeers bars are the lowest in fats & calories, so I go for one or two of those a week, and that was enough to satisfy my craving, especially after I am full on fruits & veggies - I don't have room for that 1/2 bag of oreos anymore, LOL!
A great motivator I found was to look at myself naked in a full length mirror every day. We had one in the bathroom, so when I got out of the shower, I would take a good look, and it would be enough to motivate me for the day. One day at a time!
If you can join a gym, that's great, but you can get started without it, or any equipment, too. Little things, like taking the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator, help, and you can also take brisk walks. Any cardio will help get your heart rate up and help you burn calories faster.
Set aside at least 20-30 minutes EVERY day for some type of exercise. It can be almost anything. Take that walk, do some pushups and/or deep knee bends, turn on some music and dance around your room like a madman, mow the yard, whatever, just be active! Work up a sweat!

Avoid bad food. thats the biggest step. Its hard but just push yourself away from the burgers, sugar, etc.
As for the workouts, dont worry about gym membership or anything like that, its all extra and pointless for slimming down. Stick to cardio (running, swimming, anything long and constant) always end your cardio session(everyday by the way) with a large set of crunches. Do these crunches RIGHT after the cardio.
As for staying motivated, make short term goals for youself but make them barely impossible to reach. Try as hard as you can to reach them each week but once you do...push it further.
If you manage to do this and slim down, people have unbelievable respect for you. I hate seeing overweight people complain because all they have to do is do somthing about it.

your young, sweetie, so you still have a great chance of turning your life and body around and head back on the right track. A gym membership would be a great idea, attending 4 times a week or so would be good. Eat around 6 small meals a day, spring mix salad (not romaine, it is mostly sugar), ask your family not to buy junk food, then you won't be as tempted, eat a lot of tuna and fresh fruit and veggies with no salt or butter added. Focus on the fact that you can loose the weight and you will do so! Good luck!
