It will help. But it will not work by itself. Add it to walking and other aerobic activities. Remember to keep an eye on total calories. Snacking a bite of this and bite of that is my worst enemy.
(If you are married I bet your husband could come up with some ideas on how to burn calories after six! Hey, if you're married, you're allowed and it is a most pleasant way to burn calories.)

generally, don't eat 3 hours before bedtime. (if you go to bed at 10, don't eat after 7) some say you can eat at any time as long as your total calories aren't more than you should take in in a 24-hour period.

Yes! Try to eat dinner before 6. No more snacking or nothing after that time. This will allow your body to properly digest the food before you go to bed. You may wake up feeling hungry, so make sure that you eat a healthy breakfast. You don't want to go to bed on a full stomach!

I don't even get home from work til after six (and even later the days I hit the gym). You have to eat. I would just try not to eat after 8 or 9.
Walking DOES help. Try walking 30-45 minutes at a time.

I agree with all of the above. Try to eat a lighter dinner, keep up the walking and cut out evening snacks. If you do feel peckish at night, try some carrots instead of chips or cookies. It also helps to work whole wheats into your diet instead of white, sugary breads and pasta. You still need carbs - just healthy ones.

I know that they say don't eat @ least 3 to 4 hours before bed .
And I lost 30 pounds in a little over 6 months (went from 155 to 125)
by not eating before going to bed, watching what I ate, drinking water, and doing excercises (running and riding bikes mostly) an hour + every day.... and I do believe that played a part in it.

It has for me. I eat a light breakfast like yogurt or a cheese stick, I eat a salad for lunch, you can put anything healthy on it. Another snack around 3:00, then a Light dinner like tuna or salmon with veggies.

Drink a gallon of water a day
Eat 5 or 6 small meals a day.
Breakfast
Low carb yogurt in the morning.
Snacks to eat before and after lunch
Walnuts, almonds, beef jerky, broccoli,
Fruits:
Apples and grapefruits
Lunch:
Diced chicken in a spniach salad with tomatoes, a little feta cheese(if you like it) with no or low carb dressing
Dinner
I would eat steaks/chicken/fish/
Snack after dinner.
DO NOT EAT AFTER 8PM!!!!!
Try to walk or increase you mobility.

I don't know if it works, or if it just means people cut out 90% of their evening snacking. I'd say, eat dinner between 6-8pm, and don't eat anything after dinner.

It doesn't matter what time you eat weather its 12pm or 12am. What really matters is how much fat and calories you consume in one day. Eating fried chicken for dinner at 6:00pm is worst then eating a bowl of cereal at midnight for dinner. Walking is a good form or start for exercise. If your interested in loosing weight, try eating healthier foods, more wheat's, fiber, protein. Cut down on junk food, fried foods, and anything oily.. You said you had two boys and being on the go its hard to eat healthy but try to cut down on fast foods and making your own food is healther because you know what kind of ingredients are going in there.

It definitely works. Not necessarily after 6 but about 4 hours before you go to bed, so that you have time for the food to digest and some of the calories to burn instead of just lying dormant.

It depends on how many calories that you consume the rest of the day. If you eat unhealthy throughout the day, it doesn't matter if you starve yourself after 6:00. You need to reduce your calorie intake to only healthy foods. Make sure that you eat 3 balanced meals and have 2 healthy snacks. Keeping your metabolism going is what burns calories. If you don't eat enough, your weight will be stable, but you will not be able to lose.

First of all, no considerable amount of weight can be lost without engaging in one form of exercise or the other so if walking does nothing for you, you should try something else more slightly rigorous like running walk or flat out running for example. While i don't buy this not eating after 6 fad personally i guess maybe combining it with the above mentioned you could arrive at your target weight.

Only if you've been in the habit of eating a lot after 6pm, and you cut out that amount of food entirely. (It certainly won't work if you never ate after 6 before, or if you just cram the same amount of food into the hours before 6) The point is, you must decrease your calorie intake and increase your calorie burning...no matter what tricks you use to accomplish that, it's the only thing that truly works. Eat less, exercise more.

I don't eat after 5pm and have numerous small meals through out the day. I don't notice any significant weight loss because of it but I don't gain weight either. I think avoiding eating in the evening is a good habit to get into though. The food we eat at night most often are snack foods which are high in fat content.

come on now dont do that your going to be hungry sure it may work but its not very practical. if you dont eat after 6pm and say you usually wake up at 7am thats a whole 13 hours that you have not eaten and when you wake up you would be extremely hungry and may eat more than you normally do for breakfast or defeating the whole point of trying to eat less. i suggest you just eat less for each meal. and i know you say walking does nothing for you but you wrong if you can walk for say 1 hour a day at a up beat pace you will start to see the pound fly off

No, you'll just end up starving and then gourging yourself later. Try to eat 5-6 small meals every 3-4 hours throughout the day for a total of 1500 calories. This will keep your metabolism up which is what helps to loose weight.

Your metabolism doesn't clock out at 6:00. If you want to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you consume. It really doesn't make much difference when you consume those calories. What you need to do is reduce your caloric intake and/or increase the calories you burn. That's all there is to it.

It depends on when you turn in to bed, you don't want to sleep on an extremely empty stomach. But, yes, it is not good to sleep on a full one.
A way to get fit that totally works for my Mom and I:
Jumping on the trampoline. You can probably pick up a decent one at around 40-50$ at a Fleet Farm or something of the sort.
I spend all of about 15 minutes on there a day, jumping at 5 minute intervals. (It really boosts your metabolism).
Then, I eat really whatever I want...there is a catch though, it has to be decent for you. But you must like it. It's okay to have some sweets here and there, as long as you don't over do it.
My Mom lost 30 pounds in 4 months on this diet.
The thing is, you're not supposed to "go on a diet"
If you plan to go on a diet there will eventually come that time where you get off of the diet, and end up not so in shape and back in the state you were in.
The key is to change your diet. Even if it is slight.
I found the trampoline to be my best friend. You just put your weight in the ground through your heels when you jump and that causes all of the muscles in your body to flex. It's amazing how much a person will lose, even if they didn't think they needed to lose. And it definitely gives you a work out.
:: I guess that really didn't answer your question very well...but it's a suggestion and I love doing it myself! ^_~
