My mother and grandfather have diabetes (not the kind where you take insulin). I don't think I have it, but I'm not sure.
I tend to get really sick if I go without eating for a while, and I have been sick many times during the night if I eat an early dinner and then don't eat again before bed. I have to get up and eat crackers or something or else I just feel terrible.
I feel shaky, dizzy, and my stomach starts to hurt if I miss a meal. Usually I feel like I'm going to fall over and I need to hold onto something.
Is this normal? This doesn't happen to my husband and he can go for a long time without eating if he wanted to. But if I don't eat I get sick.
So I'm interested in finding out whether I am diabetic, or if I have low blood sugar, or if it's all in my head (...pretty sure it's not but my husband thinks so!) ... What do they do in a test like this? Do you have your blood taken?
Does it sound like I should be tested?

The test is pretty easy but can take a few hours. You have to go to the lab and drink some sugary soda stuff. They will take your blood before the drink, 30 mins after the drink and then again about an hour after the drink. They are testing to see how your blood reacts to the sugary drink. |

It can be passed on in a family. My mother's sister had diabetes and I was diagnosed last year. My Dr. did a urine test which came back with high sugar levels so to confirm his diagnosis he did a blood test. |

They take a tiny drop of blood. It takes a minute. Don't eat before going in. Let them know exactly what you ate last and when. |

My brother is a diabetic so I know a lot about this. First you when you go to the doctor and tell him about this he or she will prick the tip of your finger with a blood glucose meter to check the amount of sugar in your blood. (it barely hurts.) Then if need be they should run some blood tests on you and ask you some question's about your family medical history. Please take what your feeling when you do or do not eat this is a very important thing. Don't be affraid to talk to the doctor. Feeling shaky and dizzy are all part of the signs. Along with blurred vision and going to the bathroom a lot. I hope I was able to help! Also if you don't have the money to go to your regular doctor, go to your local health dept they use sliding scale fee's. |

Simple blood test, and yes you should have it done right away. If you are diabetic you can get great control with diet and maybe meds. It's not a huge big deal. If you have diabetes and don't find out and treat it you could have serious complications. |

I dont think its in your head! being shaky and dizzy are symptoms of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).....which is the complete opposite of diabetes.... do u feel light headed to? thats another symptom. I'd go get tested if i were you...and yes the test is a blood test. note: blurred vision and going to the bathroom a lot are signs of hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) |

if you think you have diabetes and your parents do to then it may be a good idea to have the test done. |

To diagnose type 2 diabetes, your doctor may perform more than one type of tests before reaching a conclusion. Typically, the first diabetes test that doctor uses, is the blood test which measures the level of glucose in the blood. In addition to that, you will probably have other diabetes tests such as fasting plasma glucose test, oral glucose tolerance test or A1C test if the doctor suspects that you have the disorder. Certain diabetes tests may need to be repeated to make sure the diagnosis is definite. A fasting plasma glucose test measures your blood sugar level after you have fasted for at least 8 hours. This diabetes test is a fairly reliable and convenient way to diagnose type 2 diabetes. It is most reliable when done in the morning. As long as your blood sugar level is below 100 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), you are considered safe. However, if your blood sugar level is between 100 to 125 mg/dL, you have a form of prediabetes called impaired fasting glucose. This means that you are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes unless you make efforts to prevent it. If your blood sugar levels are more than 125 mg/dL, you are being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
