If an obese person becomes diabetic, will ridding themselves of obesity cure the diabetes?

That is a much more interesting question than you realise. The answer is a qualified yes. There has been some small scale work done in the USA looking at this very question. About a dozen newly diagnosed, obese type 2 diabetics were ( with their consent,) put through a gruelling regime of diet and exercise with one to one backup. They found that significant weight loss combined with very strenuous daily exercise could reverse the diagnosis. Unfortunately most people, left to their own devices would just never duplicate that sort of extreme management.

Wow, I'd have to disagree with a lot of the answers given.

First off, lets assume we're talking about Type 2 diabetes, which is where your body's insulin loses its effectiveness, and cannot clear sugar from the blood effectively. Over time, this may wear out the pancreas (where insulin is made) so it can never make enough, but caught early and treated this is certainly not a given.

Type 1 (often called juvenile onset) is where your body's immune system attacks your insulin making cells (beta cells) in your pancreas, and you lose the ability to make insulin. Type 1 diabetes is a VERY DIFFERENT PROCESS than type 2 diabetes (even though the result is the same, high blood sugars). Type 1 diabetes cannot be cured.

Type 2 diabetes can, in my opinion, be cured. By that I mean a person previously diagnosed with type 2 diabetes can reach a point where they do not meet any of the diagnostic criteria for diabetes, and are on no medications for it either. I'm not sure what people consider a cure, but I would count this type of situation as a cure. I've had several patients who changed their life, ate right, exercised, lost weight, and "cured" their diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes has a lot of additive causes, including weight-associated larger fat cells which interfere with insulin efficiency, lack of exercise which does the same, and high carbohydrate diets that keep insulin levels too high. So by changing those things, you can get the system working normally again, and in some cases, the diabetes really does go away. Cure.

it is possible that i will be less of a condition if that person loses weight. meaning that you would not have to take medication just eat sensibly so it becomes diet controlled rather than medication controlled. but it has been known to disappear like sugar diabetes that happens in pregnancy

diabetes is when the pancreas fails, it's harder for people with diabetes to loose weight as the pancreas controls the change of fats to useble energy in the body. (and the other way round)

it is possible for the diabetes to slow down,as the weight comes off.
and it may be controlled by diet alone, and not injections of insulin.

Some of you people are so uneducated. You need to learn about your disease. It's important to your health. NO. There is no cure for diabetes. Yes, type 2 can "sometimes" be controlled with diet and exercise. Sometimes it can be controlled so well, that you can actually stop taking medication. BUT, the slightest slip of the diet or an illness will put you back on the meds. Diabetes NEVER goes away. And for the guy that talked about the lap band...this is becoming a popular way for very obese type 2 diabetics to lose weight. They do NOT claim a cure, because there is none. Losing weight will be great for the health of an overweight diabetic, but there is no cure...period

It will help to keep the diabetes under control but it won't cure it. Once you have diabetes you have it.

No, unfortunately you don't cure the disease by loosing weight, but obesity is bad for diabetics. Therefore keeping a balance diet and exercise will improve it. ; )

I don't know about this certain person inparticular since everybody's body is diffrent, but i know a person who had that gastric bypass surgery done who suffered from asthma, & diabetes, & no longer is on medicine for either i wouldn't say it cured it since there is no "cure for either, but it brought it so under control they aren't having any problems with either now/for now.

Someone who develops type 2 diabetes can control their blood sugar through diet and exercise, and may not need medication, or they may come off medication when they lose enough weight, which lowers blood sugar levels. If the weight is gained back, the need for medication returns, so you are never really cured. Type 2 can even progress from pills to needing insulin if they fail to control their food intake. Type 1 Diabetics always need insulin, no matter what their weight is.

Once you develop diabetes you already have significant loss of the cells that make insulin (beta cells). Whilst the body has some regenerative potential, this is exceptionally limited. However, losing significant weight, or at least increasing physical exertion, will allow whatever is left of your beta cells to function more efficiently, making it easier to control your blood sugars, and in extreme cases, delaying the need for medication. Unfortunately, what is certain with diabetes is that live long enough, and your beta cells will fail altogether.

you cant cure diabetes

Type 1 diabetes develops when the body's natural defence system against viruses and bacteria starts to destroy the insulin-making cells in the pancreas. No one knows exactly what causes this to happen. We know that members of some families are more likely to get diabetes than others. We also know that some external influence must be present. How all these factors interact is not known.

my sister and two brothers are diabetic hope this helps

diabetes can be controlled by diet so it makes sense to lose weight and watch what you eat, it doesnt go away but it can be managed for many years in this way if you watch what you eat and drink and of course no smoking , good luck with this

It is not necessarialy a cure for " everybody ", but regular exercise ( even if just walking ) and loss of weight can improve a case of diabetes and reduce the amount of medication that you have to take and " sometimes " make it so you can stop medication.

See, I am a diabetic (type 1 not 2). That will not cure it, but it will make it much better. Eating healthy, exercising and taking care of yourself will help it and keep you healthy. There is not cure yet though, unfortunately.

So sorry, but diabetes is incurable at the present time. It is a lot more controllable if a person gets down to really skinny no matter what their weight to start with.

Doctors extimate that if a person loses at least 10% of their weight they will be able to control the diabetes much better.

But that doesn't follow either! Diabetes, uncontrolled, can and will eat away all the stored fat on the bod and the muscles as well. This is when a person starts losing weight uncontrollably, their average glucose level will be over 300 consistantly and probably higher for a long period of time.
