They are generally thought to be called wisdom teeth because they appear so lateāmuch later than the other teeth, at an age where people are supposedly wiser than as a child, when the other teeth erupt.

no idea why they called wisdom teeth, mine all came thru when i was 19, and promplty rotted away in about 2 months for some unknown reason, something genenic the dentist thinks. they are left over from when we used to eat things like grass and had a bigger jaw line hense they cause so many problems with lack of room etc, i was a rare one that had room for mine they just rotted as soon as they erupted hense why they are no more.

Because they mostly erupt at the time you are supposed to have wisdom and all the others erupt before you are supposed to have acquired wisdom.
Be grateful that I am not making any number of bad jokes here.

No idea but I do know impacted Wisdom Teeth really hurt when they are taken out.
Perhaps it is the age of the person when you develop them.

I got my first thorugh when I was 24 which broke my back molar, one at 26 was removed at the hospital before it did the same as the first, then an astounding 10 years later I got another one which came in at such a strange angle it infected my gum and inner cheek, and I was unable to open my mouth for 3 days ( hubby delighted). The dentist has x-rayed my gob, and there you go - the 4th one's lying dormant - probably waiting a couple o years til I hit 40 then WHAM.
