It means that you've not cleared the bronchea of whatever has clogged them to begin with--it could be fluid or solid. If the cough is "dry"--meaning that you're not coughing it out--you might want to consider taking either an expectorant to induce the material to be expelled. Or, you might want to take a suppressant--the material, in this case, phlegm, hasn't loosened up enough to be coughed up. Any chronic coughing that has gone on for more than two days or is producing blood needs to be attended to by a physician IMMEDIATELY. This could be symptomatic of a more serious issue.

well, it depends. if you are a smoker and just started coughing you should get checked out. if you have allergies or are anemic it may be due to change of the weather.

Coughing is obviously not good. If its caused by things like smoking it could be bad :P If your normally healthy and are now coughing alot, if you produce flegm or mucus thats a greenish color you could be sick. If its brownish you could have something severe like bronchitis. In any case it is best to get checked out, the doctor will listen to your lungs with a stethescope and make the proper diagnosis. Good luck!
