They are a dental doctor, not a medical doctor. They have earned the title "doctor," as have MD's, DO's, and PhD's. My question: Is an OD a doctor?

Veronika S
Yes, but there are Quacks in dentistry as well!

Joe Bugg
yes a dentist is a doctor.

Eva
yes!

wolverineguy1245
Yes, they are a doctor of dentistry. When you see D.D.S. that stands for doctor of dental surgery.

joyceeleann
yes

ladyluck
Yes. They have degrees in dental medicine. They have to be able to perform procedures so they need to have a degree and a license to practice medicine.

Yes, they have the same medical background, just that they specialise in teeth etc. All dentists like to be called drs.

"McRib" NREMT-P
Well yes and no, Yes in the sense that they received their doctorate, and in the sense that they can prescribe medications. But no they are not a "MD" or Medical Doctor

The principles of medicine and surgery apply to the entire body as well as the mouth, so dentists are doctors, ---there are many specific fields of dentistry such as orthodontics, oral surgery, etc. just as there are specific fields of medicine.

Joseph F
A dentist is not a physician but he does have a doctor's degree.

Yes, but in the field of dentistry. The title DDS stands for doctor of dental science.

Skippy say this question is going to bring out the rabid anti-dentites.
Of course they are a doctor
