I'm so scared..Wisdom teeth removal?
|
I'm getting my wisdom teeth out this friday and I am FREAKING out.
I'm probably going to have a huge panic attack right when I get in the little operating room..(i'm having a mini one right now as i think about it..)
In the piece of paper they gave me at my consultation said that they're putting something on my torso..WHERE on my torso and WHAT?!
I really don't want it to be my stomach because I'm really embarrassed of my appendix scar..
Also, when my mom got hers out, she was 18, she said she didn't really swell, do you think I'll swell?!
Help & encouragement will be greatly appreciated!!! Additional Details
Forgot to mention that I'm 15..if that makes any difference?

Oh, it's the worst. When you come back from the anesthesia you will awaken to a fresh new hell of pain, and horrible torment. Every waking moment you will debate your decision to allow the dentist to remove your teeth as your worst mistake to date in life. The blood will flow from your mouth like a waterfall while you sit there a wretched monster trying to catch in a cup. You will throw up from the amount of ingested blood. You will look beggingly to your parents to ask for a merciful death, but your words will be an undistiguishable series of grunts as you choke on the pain and blood. My lord I would not want to be you right not. If there is a god may he be with you in your dark hours ahead.

I got mine taken out a month ago and I'm 16. I went in and they started the IV and shot some stuff in it and I was in lala land then. I woke up during the surgrey and they kept telling me to close my eyes which I didn't fot some reason. If you do wake up during the surgrey then close your eyes so that you want feel nothing during it. They cut mine out and had to chip away some of my jaw bone. I had very little swelling and pain. When I got home I put ice on my face and kept switching it every 20 minutes for about 5 hours and I didn't have any swelling. They stuck the IV in my arm. You will be fine. Don't worry.

Don't freak out too bad. I dont know what they'd put in your torso, but in general you will get an IV (a small one) in your arm or hand and wont even know what happened. You'll have some swelling in the jaws and maybe look like a chipmunk for a day or so.
The doctor may even give you something to calm you down before he starts - mine does.

My husband has his removed in January and after it was over he was acting very goofy and stuff from all the meds he was under and he was in alot of pain and just wanted to sleep! He couldnt really talk for a day or two cause it was sooo swollen. And He didnt eat much for a week or so. You get food stuck in the holes too after.....but he was in so much pain for 2 weeks before he finaly went to the dentist when we both already knew it was his wisdom teeth. Well good luck! Dont freak it will be fine... u will be passed out while they work on u and the pain after is not sooo bad... u just cant really eat.

you sound EXACTLY like i did before i went in. i FREAKED OUT. i did not want to go through with it at all! i thought that i was going to have a panic attack also, but it really wasn't that bad after all. you just sit down in the chair and they put the gas on, and the next thing you know you are awake and it is over. simple as that. however my face swelled up like a freakin basketball (sorry but its true).

Ok... so.. I have determined it TOTALLY depend on your doctor, and on the person due to the fact that I got mine out and my doctor was a new doctor I did AWFUL. I was in such bad pain for 2 weeks I couldn't eat and was swollen and bruised. I was sick throwing up and just felt awful, I would rather get hit by a car then have that done again.
But.. My husband who just recently got them out, I warned him and told him not to do it but he did.. and he was eating McDonalds that night.. he was totally fine, NO bruising, or swelling, not even a bit! He only took Advil for the pain, and didn't ever go off his normal eating schedule. He said the only thing that hurt was opening his mouth wide.
We had the same situation, we each had two impacted, and two grown in, only difference was he had a very experienced doctor and was put under, I was awake and had a new doctor. His took 45 minutes, mine took 3 hours.(I was 15 and he was 30)
Ice your face for the first day to stop the swelling, and be sure to take pain killers before your surgical meds wear off. Second day use heat to stop swelling.
Good luck! Just remember it is only a small amount of time and then you will never have to do it again.

You'll be fine. Millions have had it done. I was very scared as well. So scared in fact that I skipped my appointment and didn't go untill 2 years later. What a mistake that was. They became very impacted and it was much harder for the dentist to remove them.
I'm not sure what they'll put on your torso but you have nothing to feel embarrassed about. These are doctors and completely understand.
As for swelling it depends how hard they need to work to remove the teeth. Don't worry about that either though. They have great medication for that. Just remember that no matter what everything will be fine. Don't let your anxiety get control of you. It will be okay just keep reminding yourself that.

I just had mine removed last friday and im 20 years old. Im on day 6 of recover, and as long as you clean clean clean your mouth (with salt water after every meal for atleast the first week), and eat soft foods for two- three days (pudding, jello, yogurt) you should be fine.
You should have some type of consultation where theyd tell you (if they dont ask) if your prone for anything, like dry socket n such.... Im doin just fine, and i didnt really have any pain, they give you meds to help. And the only problem i had was a bone splinter lodged in my gums, but thats partially due to my age and the development of my wisdom teeth. Your at the ripe age to get them removed, so you should be fine... good luck!

I was so nervous about getting mine taken out that i put it off for two years after they recomended it. In the end it wasn't anything to be worried about. You don't feel anything during and for a day or so after you just kinda sleep. In the end it is not very painful at all. The swelling depends on how they are doing the surgery which depends on whether they are coming through, how many are being removed, and the structure of the roots. You can do things to help keep it down like alternate ice and heat. As far as the strapping you down I'm not sure they didn't do that to me but you should ask your doctor and let him know that it is making you nervous

Sweetie, I know you are scared, but trust me, it won't be that bad. The dentist will give you something to relax you and ease the pain. I don't know what you are talking about on the torso thing, maybe you heard that wrong. BUT DO NOT WORRY!! It will be ok; and this too will pass. Just think, now take advantage of all the ice cream you can eat !! Stock up thursday :) Best of luck!

No worries. They won't touch your stomach. Age doesn't matter.
They'll put a needle in your arm for the anesthesia. It doesn't hurt.
You'll go to sleep and wake up all done and ready to go home. You'll be numb. They'll give you meds to take for the pain. You shouldn't have too much pain or whatever. A few days and you should be getting better. You'll probably sleep most of the day and night the day of. They'll tell you what to and not to eat. Just do what they tell you.
You should be relaxed when you go. Don't panic. They're is no reason to.

I too was FREAKING out when i had mine out. The worst part to me was the IV they gave me to put me to sleep.....but thats only because I HATE needles. I was crying and jerking my arm away every time they tried to stick me :) But after i calmed down and they got the IV in I was out in like seconds. I remember waking up to walk to the car (with help) and next thing I know I woke up in my bed. They give you pain medicine but I didn't take any of it because it didnt hurt. I think i took something like IB profin. My swelling wasn't bad either. So I have to say getting my wisdom teeth out wasnt like I thought it would be. It wasnt bad at all.
Just be calm because worrying about it and freaking out wont help in any way. I'm thinking they gave my sister some relaxing medicine before she even went to the place because she was scared, so you may want to look into that.

I got my wisdom teeth removed when I was 15 as well. It as a horrible experience. For one, my wisdom teeth werent fully broken through the gum and so they had to cut my gums and then they shot me with like 4 needles. He said i would not be able to feel it but I did! I felt the pressure of them yanking on my teeth. THEN, I had to get stitches. One side of the stitches popped open the next day and I had to stuff medicated gauze in the hole and take it out every so often. It smelled horrible! Not to mention they gave me a painkiller called Tylox which was much too powerful for my small body. I had sweating fits and threw up everywhere. Uhmmm but hey...they may put you to sleep. Hope all goes well!

The torso thing, yea I have no clue. Thats odd. Anyway, since you're 15 the teeth may not be deeply rooted which could make the whole deal a lot less painful. Swelling (at least to me) was the least of my concerns, so what if you look a little puffy? Just keep the ice on. The hardest part I thought was changing the cotton dressings in my mouth which were always nasty and bloody. The first 3 days following the procedure will be the most uncomfortable but you'll more than likely be fine.

Don't freak out. They give you EXCELLENT drugs to take after...
If they are putting something ON your torso, it'll be to monitor your heart rate. You've seen it on tv, it's a sticky thingy. Just wear a button down shirt and you can just unbutton the top couple of buttons if that's what you want. Good Luck!! Here's the scoop on the whole thing:
Before removing a wisdom tooth, your dentist will give you a local anesthetic to numb the area where the tooth will be removed. A general anesthetic may be used, especially if several or all of your wisdom teeth will be removed at the same time. A general anesthetic prevents pain in the whole body and will make you groggy or cause you to sleep through the procedure. Your dentist will probably recommend that you don't eat or drink after midnight on the night before surgery, so you are prepared for the anesthetic.
To remove the wisdom tooth, your dentist will open up the gum tissue over the tooth and take out any bone that is covering the tooth. He or she will separate the tissue connecting the tooth to the bone and then remove the tooth. Sometimes the dentist will cut the tooth into smaller pieces to make it easier to remove.
After the tooth is removed, you may need stitches. Some stitches dissolve over time and some have to be removed after a few days. Your dentist will tell you whether your stitches need to be removed. A folded cotton gauze pad placed over the wound will help stop the bleeding.
What To Expect After Surgery
In most cases, the recovery period lasts only a few days. Take painkillers as prescribed by your dentist or oral surgeon. The following tips will help speed your recovery.
Bite gently on the gauze pad periodically, and change pads as they become soaked with blood. Call your dentist or oral surgeon if you still have bleeding 24 hours after your surgery.
While your mouth is numb, be careful not to bite the inside of your cheek or lip, or your tongue.
Do not lie flat. This may prolong bleeding. Prop up your head with pillows.
Try using an ice pack on the outside of your cheek for the first 24 hours. You can use moist heat-such as a washcloth soaked in warm water and wrung out-for the following 2 or 3 days.
Relax after surgery. Physical activity may increase bleeding.
Eat soft foods, such as gelatin, pudding, or a thin soup. Gradually add solid foods to your diet as healing progresses.
Do not use a straw for the first few days. Sucking on a straw can Loosen the blood clot and delay healing.
After the first day, gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water several times a day to reduce swelling and relieve pain.
Do not smoke for at least 24 hours after your surgery. The sucking motion can Loosen the clot and delay healing. In addition, smoking decreases the blood supply and can bring germs and contaminants to the surgery area.
Avoid rubbing the area with your tongue or touching it with your fingers.
Continue to brush your teeth and tongue carefully.
Your dentist will remove the stitches after a few days, if needed.
Why It Is Done
A wisdom tooth is extracted to correct an actual problem or to prevent problems that may come up in the future. When wisdom teeth come in, a number of problems can occur:
Your jaw may not be large enough for them, and they may become impacted and unable to break through your gums.
Your wisdom teeth may break partway through your gums, causing a flap of gum tissue to grow over them. Food and germs can get trapped under the flap and cause your gums to become red, swollen, and painful. These are signs of infection.
More serious problems can develop from impacted teeth, such as infection, damage to other teeth and bone, or a cyst.
One or more of your wisdom teeth may come in at an awkward angle, with the top of the tooth facing forward, backward, or to either side.
How Well It Works
Wisdom tooth removal usually is effective in preventing:
Crowding of the back teeth.
A wisdom tooth becoming stuck in the jaw (impacted) and never breaking through the gums.
Red, swollen, and painful gums caused by a flap of skin around a wisdom tooth that has only partially come in.
Gum disease and tooth decay in the wisdom tooth, which may be harder to clean than other teeth, or in the teeth and jaw in the area of the wisdom tooth.
Risks
After a wisdom tooth is removed, you may experience:
Pain and swelling in your gums and tooth socket where the tooth was removed.
Bleeding that won't stop for about 24 hours.
Difficulty with or pain from opening your jaw (trismus).
Slow-healing gums.
Damage to existing dental work, such as crowns or bridges, or to roots of a nearby tooth.
A painful inflammation called dry socket, which happens if the protective blood clot is lost too soon.
Numbness in your mouth and lips after the local anesthetic wears off, due to injury or inflammation of nerves in the jaw.
Rare side effects, including:
Numbness in the mouth or lips that does not go away.1
A fractured jaw i

It depends on your teeth and how good your oral surgeon is. If you have difficult teeth to pull, you'll more likely have side effects like swelling, bruising, etc. because they have to work harder in your mouth. However, these guys do this all day long and know what they are doing. My brother is an oral surgeon, and one thing you have going for you is that you are pretty young (the younger you get it done the easier they are to remove and recovery is usually quicker). Average recovery is about 3 days of the initial soreness, and then it gets better after day 3. My friends have had it done already and they said it was no big deal (you just have to do extra cleaning in your mouth for a while after the surgery). I don't know what the torso thing is, but it could just be something related to anesthesia (they won't be doing anything surgically there, because they are only licensed to perform on the head, minus the eyes and brain). Good luck, and don't worry!

I felt just like you did when I got mine pulled, but really, it's not bad. AT ALL. Really. I'm not just saying that. What happens, is you go into the room, and they let you smell this thing that lets your relax. It feels really good. Then you'll fall asleep. While they're doing the operation, you won't be aware at all. A while later, probably at your house or in the car on the way home you'll wake up, and won't even feel a thing. Your mouth will be numb, but it won't hurt at all. The next day you might be a little bit sore, but it's hardly anything. Take some Tylenol if it hurts too bad, but it shouldn't. Just relax, you'll be fine. I don't know what they're talking about with your torso... but don't worry about it. You can ask them before they start so you're prepared. As for swelling, it's not so bad, mine only lasted a day, but everyone's different. It will probably last 3 days at the most. Also, when I got mine, I took a teddy bear with me... kind of embarrassing, but it really helped calm me down! Really, it's not a big deal and won't hurt that bad. You'll be fine!
