Tumour/Cancer?
My dad had a tumour like 5 years ago. He got it removed by surgery. This year at April, the tumour reappeared... this time there was two. So he had surgery and got them removed and they said that they burned that spot so no more tumour comes. He had an appointment today and they said that he needed chemotherapy for 6 weeks every Wednesday. Is this because of cancer? If so, can it be cured?

Chemotherapy is one form of a cancer treatment. Radiation is another. There is no 100% cure yet for cancer but with chemo and radiation chances of the cancer going into remition are better. Here is a web site that will further help you understand your dad's cancer.

A surgeon told me that chemo and/or radiation after cancer surgery is like taking an antibiotic after an infected place is cleaned out. They suggest it for almost everyone, just in case.

Chemotherapy is often given after surgery to make sure that any remaining cancerous cells are destroyed. The doctors just want to be as sure as they can that your dad is completely clear.

If the cancer is the same cancer as 5 years ago, it sounds like it is now in stage 4 (distant metastasis). If new tumors are few and in "safe" areas of the body, they can be removed. Mets to the lung, liver and, brain are especially difficult to treat. The overall prognosis is not good. However, people have achieved long remissions again.

As for the chemotherapy, if the tumors were removed with margins, the chemotherapy is used as a preventative measure against any cancer cells that may be in the body. If the tumors were not completed removed, they are used to hopefully kill, slow down or, stable the tumors.

The chemo is a precaution just to make sure all the cancerous cells were removed.
