My doctor started me out on 800 mg. of Ibuprofen, then I went to Naproxin (gave me an ulcer) and finally Celebrex, which eventually quit working. I don't really think there is anything for chronic pain. I use Capsazin (its an over the counter cream) and I take Vicodin sparingly~

You are not feeling pain for the fun of it. It is telling you there is a problem that you need to fix. Drugs just kill the pain. A problem like yours can cause high blood pressure so check that. See his webpage for something that can help.

I have been in constant pain from various things since about age 14...
I avoid meds. I take realxing herbal teas if I need it, and a lot of soothing warm baths. I have a good chiropractor to care for my back, and his care also helps the whole body be in balance.
I also have orthopedic insoles for my shoes, they help my balance too, because chronic pain often throws the balance off a bit. You don't really notice it, but it adds a little strain all the time, so orthopedics are good. I resisted that for a while because I didn't want to feel like an old lady! And as a young woman, of course I wanted to wear cute shoes with no room for therapeutic insoles! But I was very luckly to get a half-price, pay-over-time deal with my chiropracto, so I went for it and I'm so glad I did.
But I think the best medicine of all is talking to other people with the same situation. It sounds corny, but its true. Everything is twenty times harder when you feel you are alone with it. And the other way around - a crowd around you can help lift the pain, so it sits less heavy on you. Find a support group through a good doctor, like a naturopathic doctor.
I know all the good stuff I've mentioned costs money! IT is SO frustrating, I have a terrible time with money. But help and support cost only the time and effort to connect with people.

I had horrible back, neck and head pain from multiple car accidents. I tried Vicodin, Oxycontin, Percocet, Morphine and several others. I only found relief when I stopped all medication and relied on meditation, exercise and play. I usually support the use of any pain relievers necessary but in my case they did more harm than good.
Addition:
I forgot to mention I use Stoppain. It's an analgesic spray. It isn't very strong but it gives some immediate relief so you can break the cycle before the pain gets bad.

I am not a health care provider but I have dealt with neck and back pain most of my adult life.you need to get checked by either a good chiropractor or a physician who specializes in pain management. as far as I know about back pain, taking medicine is only plastering over the real problems.

Exercise. You can try topical anylagesics for temporary relief, but our backs tend to hurt when the muscles that support them become weak.
Cure the cause, loose the pain.

I feel for you honey. I have had fibromyalgia for over 5 years and I can relate to everything you're saying, but I can help you.
The first thing you need to do is get in to see a good Rheumatologist. They seem to be the only doctors that understand the dynamics of this condition and can treat it properly. The good news is that FM is a condition not a disease, so you cannot die from FM, although it may feel like you are sometimes. So get into the specialist.
The most important med's you need are muscle relaxers (i take Zanaflex). The pain is coming from your joints and muscles becoming stiff, and stiffer, and stiffer. The muscle relaxers will make you feel like a new person. Then you need a good sleeping pill (i take Ambien). My guess is that you are not getting a good nights sleep which makes you tired, and fatigue makes your muscles stiffen. Ambien is a Gentle sleep agent that will not give you a hangover and you are not in such a deep sleep that you wouldn't be able to hear a baby cry...etc. Then you need a pain pill of some kind. Tramadol is a mild pain med, Alieve works well for me sometimes, but if your pain is severe ask for Vicoden. It's a narcotic and in small amounts takes the edge off of the bad pain. Most FM patients suffer from depression, for that I take Effexor xr, but there is a relatively new med called Cymbalta that works well on depression and also works on your pain. If you are getting migraine headaches you might suggest Topamax. Topamax was originally a med for seizure patience but they have found over the past 7 years that it works well for migraines. Its worked for me. I had them everyday. I don't get them at all now.
FM patients have 'pressure points' which are 18 specific nerves in your lower back and lower neck, that when pressure is applied to these specific nerves, you'll feel much more pain than the normal person. This is one of the tell tail signs for a doc. to see if you have FM. These specific nerves in your neck and back is where your pain and stiffness is coming from. FM waxes and waynes. One thing that can set off a flair is stress, over working yourself too. I'm sure you are noticing that you cannot do as much as you used to do with out 'hitting the wall' and then the next day or two you are on the couch, good for nothing and feeling like you have the flu.
Get a good Rheumatologist..........if i could give you only one bit of advise that would be it. Good luck.
