vickie32091	They both are potent narcotics. Morphine is probably considered a "stronger" drug, but it depends on dosage also. Some patients are very responsive to one analgesic over another. Also the meds are prescribed for totally different types of pain. Morphine depresses respiration's and may cause death due to over suppression of respiration's, people tend to have more issues with Morphine also, more hallucinations and alterations in thought processes. It also cause severe itching in many people. Codeine is used in Pt's with head injuries because it is less sedating, while providing good pain control. Codeine is also useful with painful cough due to pneumonia etc. Both medications carry a potential for dependency if used too long. (especially if the pain is gone and you con't to use to get high!)
