Gargle with warm salt and water every 1/2 hour. That is what they do in the hospital. |

zinc lozenges work well if youre looking for a more natural cure - it also helps further infections from occurring. otherwise, quick fixes such as chloroseptic spray or sore throat lozenges like cepacol or halls may numb the throat temporarily and make you comfortable. hot liquids (preferably tea or cider, nothing to think like hot chocolate or caffeinated like coffee) may help soothe the pain. warm lemon water also helps alot of people. |

Mom always said to gargle with warm salt water. It might taste horrible, but it somehow sooths the throat. It might be summer, but chicken soup is good too. And popsicles. I would always rotate. |

To help the pain from the sore throat, gargle regularly with warm salt water -- do this four or five times daily. You can also take a cough medicine, but try not to take too much of this, as the expectorants can cause nausea and vomitting, which is really the last thing you want when you're already sick. Instead, try taking a spoonful of honey when you're throat is feeling particularly bad -- this will coat your throat and help keep the cough from irritating it and making it feel dry and scratchy. To help stave off the spread of infection, you can also gargle with peroxide -- but don't take it straight up! Mix it half and half with water and gargle for as long as you can. You may also want to swish it around in your mouth a bit. It will make your mouth feel kind of funny, and it will taste a little strange, so you can rinse out your mouth with water or, better yet, listerine. Make sure to drink plenty of liquids, but stay away from acidic drinks which will further irritate your throat. Do not drink milk, either...it will coat your throat, but it can irritate a cough. There is also a great tea made by yogi tea called "throat comfort." It's got some very soothing ingredients, and it also has Slippery Elm bark and Mullein which form a protective slippery coating along your throat's mucous lining. If you can get a hold of this stuff, it's relatively expensive as far as tea goes, but I swear by it -- I get sore throats all the time especially in the winter. Finally, (because I know this is becoming quite exhausting) you may want to invest in a humidifier if you do not have one, or spend some time in the bathroom with the door closed and a hot shower running (or you can, yourself, partake in a nice hot shower or bath.) The steam will help open up your airways to alleviate a cough, and the moisture will help soothe a sore throat. And, as always, if it doesn't get better in a week or two, or continues to get worse, see your doc! (But you knew that already) Good luck!! |

My sister sent me a home remedy recently I have yet to try. Mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey and take 1 tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria. |
