Im not sure how true it is but ive been careful since hearing this.

Apparently too much Vit C can sometimes stop the contraceptive pill from working.

If your talking about supplements - your better off trying to get it from your food rather than a tablet - its better for you, not added chemicals and usually cheaper

j While being harmless in most typical quantities, as with all substances to which the human body is exposed, vitamin C can still cause harm under certain conditions.

[edit] Common side-effects
Relatively large doses of vitamin C may cause indigestion, particularly when taken on an empty stomach.

When taken in large doses, vitamin C causes diarrhea. In one trial, doses up to 6 grams of Ascorbic Acid were given to 29 infants, 93 children of preschool and school age, and 20 adults for more than 1400 days. With the higher doses, toxic manifestations were observed in five adults and four infants. The signs and symptoms in adults were nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, flushing of the face, headache, fatigue and disturbed sleep. The main toxic reactions in the infants were skin rashes.[78]

[edit] Possible side-effects
As vitamin C enhances iron absorption[79], iron poisoning can become an issue to people with rare iron overload disorders, such as haemochromatosis. A genetic condition that results in inadequate levels of the enzyme glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), can cause sufferers to develop hemolytic anemia after ingesting specific oxidizing substances, such as very large dosages of vitamin C.[80]

For decades, large doses of vitamin C have been speculated to trigger oxalate formation and increase absorption of dietary oxalate, possibly causing kidney stones.[81] However, this speculation may not be justified since there is no clear relationship between excess Ascorbic Acid intake and kidney stone formation. [82]

During the first month of pregnancy, high doses of vitamin C may suppress the production of Progesterone from the corpus luteum.[83] Progesterone, necessary for the maintenance of a pregnancy, is produced by the corpus luteum for the first few weeks, until the placenta is developed enough to produce its own source. By blocking this function of the corpus luteum, high doses of vitamin C (1000+ mg) is theorized to induce an early miscarriage. In a group of spontaneously aborting women at the end of the first trimester, the mean values of vitamin C were significantly higher in the aborting group. However, the authors point out that this relationship may not necessarily be a causal one.[84]

[edit] Chance of overdose
As discussed previously, vitamin C exhibits remarkably low toxicity. The LD50 (the dose that will kill 50% of a population) in rats is generally accepted to be 11.9 grams per kilogram when taken orally.[32] The LD50 in humans remains unknown, owing to medical ethics that preclude experiments which would put patients at risk of harm. However, as with all substances tested in this way, the LD50 is taken as a guide to its toxicity in humans and no data to contradict this has been found.

I did have a client develop severe red rashes/acne on her face after taking vitamin C. I look at this as the body pushing out toxins, but the client was basically of the mind that toxins or not, she wasn't about to go through this for god knew how long and stopped taking the supplement. There are also reports of folks developing dental carries and acid burns in and around the mouth with high doses of non-buffered Vitamin C.

Love the stuff.

However it can make some drugs ineffective. I took a coupla grams before going to a dentist and found out the hard way. The novacaine never did kick in right. A very bad afternoon.

Just go light before seeing the dentist or doctor.

I'm assuming you already know the great advantages.

One perceived disadvantage is that when you take Vitamin C for an extended period of time you get viral symptoms - cold, congestion, etc. In reality, this too is an advantage. Vitamin C will help release latent viruses in your system that are causing other problems. When the release and come out, they manifest as the illness they never became when they got locked away in your system. Removing the viruses actually helps in other areas of your health that were seeming unrelated - like mood, attention, fatigue, etc. My husband has been known to get skin rashes from Vit C cleaners. I now suspect those were viruses coming out. We have put him back on Vit C and he is doing great.

Excessive Vitamin C intake can cause diarrhea. If you get diarrhea, just back off the amount you are taking.

If you have heartburn it could make it worst since they are acidic. You can buy the low acid (buffered) kind in that case. Too much of it might give you the runs. Other then that I don't think you can overdose on it since your body only aborbs so much of it per day and the rest comes out in your urine.

nothing! vitamin C is the ONLY vitamin that you cant overdose on. you can take as many as you want and not get sick.

on the other hand, you cant get dependent on it. your body has a natural defense system. if you take vitamin C all the time, your body might not defend itself well without it.
