My step son has ADHD. I stopped giving him the ingredient red40. It really helps and is in things like red cola red candy. You can find it on the back of the can...if its there, don't give it to them. You will be surprised just taking the one ingredient away helps.

Limiting Sugar is a good start. However; children with ADD are treated with Ritalin which is Methylphenidate hydrochloride, which is just another way of saying Methamphetamine or speed as it is called on the streets. Kids with ADD have to be sped up to slow them down. Where a child without ADD may get hyper with caffeine a child with ADD will be calmed. Don't ask me to explain that one, I still haven't figured it out, but I have raised two boys who are now adults that both have ADD and coffee was my best friend. When they would get wound up I would fix them a cup of coffee(their Doctor recommended this) and in no time they would wind down. It also helps with their ability to focus. Coffee can also be a first test in trying to figure out if it really is ADD. Fix them a cup and watch their behavior. If they get hyper then they are probably not ADD. If they calm and are able to focus on a given task like reading or school work, then I suggest you have them tested for ADD or ADHD. I't is probably not a good idea to just feed them coffee on a regular bases, but it sure does help in situations where your child is begining to get out of control and you need for them to be calm, such as at public events, like school plays, etc... My youngest son would know when he was feeling "antsy", as he called it, and would fix himself a cup so that he could focus for his sports or activities. It is also good to get them involved in sports. They have so much energy that they need to run out.

I've use salmon Oil and Magnesium supplements with very good effect. Long ago a pediatritian named Dr. Lyndon Smith noticed that if he gave his hyperactive patients Magnesium supplements they improved greatlly. He wrote about this in a book.
I don't like removing foods from childs diet unliess its junk food or something they are allergic to.

I also did biobeedback training with helped a lot. I even read about a doctor who helps children to increase the connections in the focusing parts of their brains by having the child juggle bean bags while you ask him simple questions. The questions help him focus in the right areas of the brain. This was very successful for the child mentioned in the article I read.
Also check out Dr Thom Hartman's books explaining that people with adhd have inherited the hunter/gatherer traits of our ancient ancesters. He tell how we can adapt ourselves successfuly in a world that is geared to farmer types.

NO SUGAR, NO WHEAT, NO DAIRY......That's right. 70% of a Child's Diet in America come from these 3 sources. Go to www.dogtorj.net to find out what Wheat and Dairy are so freakin' Evil. Also, make sure the kid isn't taking in food coloring. Make sure your not giving him fast food. That's about the worst thing you can do. Also, think back to when he or she had their last vaccinations. Did the problems start soon after that?

If you need to "give" him or her something. Look into Harmonic Innerprizes' "Etherium Black," and "Etherium Gold." The stuff is amazing and beats psychotropics any day.

I recommend a 12 pack of Corona with lime and an Xbox 360. This works for most males well into their 30's.

LIMIT OR NO: processed foods, breads, pasta, pizza, waffles/pancakes, poptarts/cereal bars, most cereals, white potatoes, white rice, sugars, sweets, lowfat/ processed foods, sodas, caffeine, vegetable oils/margarine. REASON: These foods turn to sugar, or speed, or are artificial

FOODS THAT ARE "OK": Fish, meats, peanut butter, eggs cheese vegetables, fruits/juices (no sugar added), beans, nuts, dried fruits (look out for sugar), grains, brown rice, whole milk, Soy milk, Olive oil: extra virgin, 1st cold pressed, some fats/butter, cottage cheese, yogurt, lots of water. REASON: These foods contain proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water which are essential.

This list is not a diet. These foods are listed the way they are because of their metabolic value, how they are digested and used by the whole organism. Metabolism has a direct effect on neurological function. The brain is fed through the bloodstream, and the "food" in the bloodstream comes from what is put in the mouth and stomach. When we feed ourselves, we are feeding our brain.

Note: This is the information my son's doctor gave to me. He explained that the closer the food is to its original source the better. That is why he recommends butter vs. margarine, lard vs. vegetable oil. He also explained that it will take my family up to a year to fully adopt this way of eating. Hope it is helpful.
