Believe me if you still have heartburn go get it checked by a doctor. it could be G.E.R.D.(Gastroesophageal reflux disease) or as most people call acid reflux disease. It's not something you should take lightly it could lead to cancer of the esophagus. I know this from a family member who died from it. STAY AWAY FROM SPICY FOODS.

Been there. Eliminate carbs from your diet. After a while, my acid reflux was gone. If you don't want to change your diet, try Pepcid AC.

Smaller more frequent meals reduces the risk of reflux. Avoid acidy foods, spicy foods, rich or fatty foods. Do not eat within 2-3 hours of bed time. Elevated the head of your bed when you do go to sleep. Do the most of your drinking earlier in the day so that it can process through and avoid acidic juices such as orange, citrus, etc. Avoid caffeine, chocolate, etc.

Stay away from anything with Vitamin C in it, it will make it worse. (I learned this the hard way)

Probably you're having lots of starches and it kicks your stomach into acid overdrive. An excellent counteractive is to eat a Celery stick. I swear. Always keep Celery around. It's equivalent to one Tums.
Sometimes even the Celery's effect will be diminished by an acid indigestion. You can quell it safely with a solution of 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda that has been very diluted in a cup of water. Stir it a lot until it disappears. Don't have more than 1/2 teaspoon at one time.
