Well, St Johns Wort is the standard answer, and another thread has mentioned that this is now believed to be more effective when combined with Passion Flower (passiflora).

I have suffered from depression off and on for over 30 years, and I can tell you some of the other stuff that I've tried:

pushing the thoughts away and focusing on something positive - find something that you ARE happy with, and always substitute thinking about that whenever a depressive thought crops up. Works pretty well once you get good at it. Hard to start off with.

keeping busy - keeping your mind occupied with things all the time only works while you are concentrating. When you stop, it all comes flooding back, if you let it.

pulling yourself together - rarely works at all, but you can sometimes postpone the angst for an hour or so.

going out to have fun - i used to just go along when friends insisted, and end up sitting in a corner feeling isolated, wondering why i couldn't get into all this stuff any more. If it's a show or something, rather than a party, you might lose yourself for a bit, though.

working out - not bad. It does help by making you feel that you are taking control of at least something in your life, plus there are the endorphins, and the improved figure - all this makes you feel a bit better for a while.

swimming/kayaking etc - similar to working out, but more fun!

affirmations and visualisation - helpful on those days when you can get the willpower together to do them.

prayer - very helpful if you can hand over your problem and trust that it will be dealt with.

buddhism - The Buddha's First Noble Truth is "There is suffering". You kinda think he understood. I have found the techniques taught by the Tibetan teacher Sogyal Rinpoche (author of The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying) to be very helpful indeed.

To tell you the truth, i think it's a shame people are so negative about medication - it helps a lot of people. But there's one thing that is 100% natural, but *never* mentioned in answers like this - cognitive behaviour therapy.

People are a bit scared of psychologists because they don't really know what they're all about - and TV is going to fill your head with lies on this one. Cognitive behaviour therapy is where a psychologist sits down with you and helps you come up with strategies to keep yourself mentally healthy - thinking positively, having relationships (not just sexual) that are good for you, reacting to stressful events better. It involves no psychoactive substances whatsoever and has been shown to be effective.

Other tips? Plenty of exercise is essential. Enough sunlight (but not too much). Friends and family that love and support you.

And even if you don't like medication, do keep in touch with your doctor. If you're clear you wont take medication, they cant make you (and do let them know if you wont), and it's important that there's somebody looking out for you that knows what they are doing.

For me, the best natural product for depression was MindSoothe. It's really helped, but be careful not to take any other antidepressants. Also not good if you're pregnant or lactating, otherwise, I'd recommend MindSoothe for depression. Only thing is, one jar does not last a month. If I recall, it lasts about 3 weeks or so, but still, it was much cheaper than my antidepressants. HOW TO HELP YOURSELF IF YOU ARE DEPRESSED
Depressive disorders make one feel exhausted, worthless, helpless, and hopeless. Such negative thoughts and feelings make some people feel like giving up. It is important to realize that these negative views are part of the depression and typically do not accurately reflect the actual circumstances. Negative thinking fades as treatment begins to take effect. In the meantime:

Set realistic goals in light of the depression and assume a reasonable amount of responsibility.
Break large tasks into small ones, set some priorities, and do what you can as you can.
Try to be with other people and to confide in someone; it is usually better than being alone and secretive.
Participate in activities that may make you feel better.
Mild exercise, going to a movie, a ballgame, or participating in religious, social, or other activities may help.
Expect your mood to improve gradually, not immediately. Feeling better takes time.
It is advisable to postpone important decisions until the depression has lifted. Before deciding to make a significant transition change jobs, get married or divorced discuss it with others who know you well and have a more objective view of your situation.
People rarely "snap out of" a depression. But they can feel a little better day-by-day.
Remember, positive thinking will replace the negative thinking that is part of the depression and will disappear as your depression responds to treatment.

There are various home remedies that may help you to get overcome depression. I have tried to compile few of them here for you. One very common is to prepare a tea by boiling 1 cup of water. To this add powder of 2 green cardamoms seeds, add sugar and drink this 2 times a day. This is very effective home remedy for depression.

Another easy natural remedy for depression is Kava (Piper methysticum). It calms the mind and produces a feeling of well-being and contentment. It is a remedy for depression without side effects.

my dr tried to put me on antidepressants too.. find something to do, a new hobby or a better job postiion with more responsibility.... try to think if u were gonna die tomorrow ... you wouldnt want to be sad... get out and do something fun! also what was good for me was that i got a notebook and started writing things down, even if it is just jibberish write down the first things that come to your mind, even if it switches in the middle of a thought and switches back.. writing thru your thoughts will make you feel better and also make you think about why you are actually deperssed... did something happen? if not write anyways you may find out something about yourself that was hidden before!

First, see a doctor anyway to rule out a medical cause for the depression.

I recommend learning to do Meditation (find the book Meditation by Gawain). It is a great way to relieve stress and find some peace. Physically, yoga is a great way to calm yourself.

Is there a reason you can find for the depression? Is there anything you can do to improve that situation causing it?

A good hobby to fill your free time and challenge your mind and talents is a good thing.
