Keep hydrated with properly balanced electrolytes. This is the most appropriate treatment in most cases of diarrhea, even dysentery. Large amounts of electrolytes are found in the sports drinks Gatorade and Powerade, so it is a wise choice to drink these while ill with diarrhea. Consuming large amounts of water unbalanced by dietary electrolytes may result in a dangerous electrolytic imbalance which in rare cases can prove fatal (cf. water poisoning).
Try eating more but smaller portions. Eat regularly. Don't eat or drink too quickly.
Intravenous fluids or a "drip": Sometimes, especially in children, dehydration can be life-threatening and intravenous fluid may be required.
Oral rehydration therapy: Taking a sugar/salt solution, which can be absorbed by the body.
Opioids and their analogs should not be used for infectious diarrhea as they are said to prolong the illness and may increase the risk of a carrier state. Opioids are the most effective antidiarrheals available. Their principal method of action is to inhibit peristalsis. Loperamide, also known as Imodium, is the most commonly used antidiarrheal. Loperamide is chemically related to the drug Meperidine or Demerol, but does not cross the blood-brain barrier and does not appear to induce tolerance or dependence. Other opioids used to control diarrhea (in increasing order of strength) are: Lomotil (diphenoxylate with Atropine); Motofen (difenoxin with Atropine); Codeine; paregoric (camphorated tincture of Opium), Opium Tincture (laudanum); and Morphine. The most potent opioids are generally reserved for chronic diarrhea (e.g., from complications of AIDS).
Antibiotics: antibiotics may be required if a bacterial cause is suspected and the patient is medically ill. They are sometimes also indicated for workers with carrier states in order to clear up an infection so that the person can resume work. Parasite-related diarrhea (e.g. giardiasis) require appropriate antibiotics. Antibiotics are not routinely used, as the cause is rarely bacterial and antibiotics may further upset intestinal flora and worsen rather than improve the diarrhea. Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea and pseudomembranous colitis is often caused by antibiotic use.
Dietary manipulation: in particular, patients with celiac disease should avoid wheat products. Patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome can make dietary changes to prevent the over-reaction of their gastrocolic reflex that results in diarrhea. Having soluble Fiber foods and supplements, substituting Soy or rice products for dairy, being careful with fresh fruits and vegetables that are high in insoluble fiber, and eating regular small amounts can all help to lessen the symptoms of IBS[4]. Foods and beverages to be avoided or minimized include red meat, oily or fatty (and fried) products, dairy (even when there is no Lactose Intolerance), solid chocolate, coffee (regular and decaffeinated), alcohol, carbonated beverages (especially those also containing Sorbitol) and artificial sweeteners[4]. Several of the most common dietary triggers are well-established by clinical studies at this point; research has shown that IBS patients are hypersensitive to fats, insoluble fibers, and fructose[5] [6] [7].
Hygiene and isolation: Hygiene is important in limiting spread of the disease.
It is claimed that some fruit, such as bananas, mangoes, papaya, guava and pineapple may have positive effects for this condition [citation needed]. Bananas have the merits of being easily obtainable, and they are unlikely to have any other significant unwanted side effects. Bananas and mangoes are high in soluble Fiber, which can help regulate water content in the bowel and alleviate diarrhea. Mucilage, which can be obtained in capsule form, may be helpful for the same reason. Mucilage can also be used as cereal for babies, as it is easily digested. The high acid content of pineapple may make this food a bad choice for people suffering from chronic diarrhea.
A common non-pharmaceutical based treatment is to ingest only clear liquids for 24 hours (sports drinks, soup broth, popsicles, jello, Ginger ale) followed by the slow introduction of a bland diet often described by the mnemonic BRAT for Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast.
In the third world a common way to stop diarrhea is to take one handful of rice and an equal quantity of water, place in a pot, bring to a boil for 3 to 5 minutes. Pouring off and drinking the fluid usually stops diarrhea - even faster than some First World over-the-counter "remedies." Water can be added to the remaining hard rice which is to be eaten - once cooked - by the patient.[citation needed]
A common remedy in Latin America, particularly Costa Rica, Panama and Nicaragua, is to mix a half glass of water with two spoons of prepared starch, a half spoon of sugar and the juice of a lemon and drink it; the starch is supposed to calm the intestines

if it is due to a parasite, you really need to see a doc. Especially since you have been out of the country. Stick to a clear liquid diet until then.

This type of diarrhea typically requires an antibiotc and 'stopping' it may make the problem worse so my advice is to see a physician. The only effective over the counter medication for diarrhea is Loperamide (the generic of Imodium) and you make take one after every loose stool even if fifteen minutes apart but you should not exceed eight doses daily. Indeed if eight doses in twenty four hours does not resolve the diarrhea then you most certainly must seek medical attention. Good luck.

you probably have travelers diarreaha, drink lots of fluids. i wouldnt take immodium unless you are out in public and need to be able to hold it; its good to let your body flush the crud out. you should see your doctor to make sure its just simple travelers diarreaha and not an infection that needs to be treated, especially if it has lasted more than a couple days already.

QUICK and SIMPLE answer, fibre, because it adds bulk to your stool... although if you suspect you may be sick, (eg. possible food posioning), having probiotics (the bacteria in yoghurt) will help you get rid of a bug if you have one, take these as frequently as you need them, but fibre is the best! you can even get fibre capsules (which d SIMPLE answer, fibre, because it adds bulk to your stool (poo). If you're sick is easier than eating unhealthy bread!) if you have the capsules, drink lots of water!
GOODLUCK!

My mother had that bad. I found a formula in a bottle.that Edgar Casey had come up with for diarrhea at a health food store, it cured her and she had had that problem for years. it was amazeing how fast and how well it worked.after she took it she didnt need to keep taking it . it just cured her.You might be able to call around to some health food stores and find it.It might be a parisite. I dont know really what would be good to kill them.in your intestines.Good luck and I hope you have a Merry Christmas

You have a bug. Take something called Oil of Oregano (about 5-6 drops in a small glass of water) about 2-3 times a day. It's an anti-bacterial/anti-viral, all natural solution for diarrhea + digestive disturbances.

Well if you were out of the country, chances are you have a nasty bacteria or something... did you drink the water there? I would see a doctor if I were you. If it is severe diarrhea, you could become very dehydrated, and your electrolytes could get imbalanced. This is a serious medical condition. (I'm a nurse)
Also, do not take anti-diarrhea medication! If you were in Peru, and suddenly developed diarrhea, it is most-likely caused by bacteria. Your body's mechanism of getting rid of the infection is diarrhea.
To rehydrate yourself, avoid gatorade. It will make you worse! Don't drink 7 Up either. Try 1/2 water & 1/2 gatorade mix.
