What's the best cure for cold sores? Does Abreva really work?

calyx156	A few things: 1) Congratulations. Whoever has a cold sore, now has herpes. Yes, usually it's HSVI, but not always, and if the person w/ the cold sore goes down on their lover, they CAN transmit oral herpes to their lover's genitals. 2) Zinc +/- 50mg/day can help w/ this, as can Lysine (500mg/2-3x/day). 3) There is a Zinc lozenge and a cold sore cream made by Quantum that I have found to be wonderful for people. 4) As herpes is more a hassle than anything else, and b/c I have had people in my clientele only have outbreaks like every 10-20 years or so, and because drugs like Abreve cannot cure HSVI or HSVII, I am inclined to urge people to avoid pharmaceuticals for herpes like the plague. No one is really sure what the longterm effects are, HSV can still be spread by ASV--Asymptomatic Viral Shedding--whether there are sores or lesions present or not, so you're never really safe, you just think you are. I would concentrate a lot more on stress management and strengthening my immune system. Maybe abreva does "work", but the questions you should be asking are, "HOW? and at what cost to my body and my immune system?" What are the side effects? Was this answer helpful to you? Yes / No

mikersley@sbcglobal.net	Abreva is expensive and takes a long time to work. Campho Phenique works best for me. THere is also a prescription you can get from your doctor that is wonderful. robocop48	Cold sores are caused by virus' and there is no cure for a viral outbreak once it occurs...only palliative treatment to protect it till the body heals it like Vaseline. Bacterial infections can be cured once contracted, but viral infections can only be vaccinated for prior to infection (if a vaccine has been invented). Was this answer helpful to you? Yes / No

mystrymind	I'm sure abreva works...but slowly. Prevention is the best medicine. I have heard that the herb Oregano (not the spice stuff which is not real Oregano, but rather Mexican Basil) but true Oregano kills alot of that stuff in you colon and body so that it doesn't come up anymore. ceddog86	While there is no actual cure for Herpes simplex virus, there are a couple of short term remedies that will reduce the appearance or make them disappear. abreva works quite well. Someone above said that it is expensive and takes forever, but if you use it at the first sign of redness or pain at an outbreak, it usually prevents the cold sore from fully forming. Campho, on the other hand, just dries it out. This is quite helpful, but it basically treats the symptom rather than the root cause. You can also talk to your health care provider about Acyclovir or other anti-virals, taken orally for about 10 days, that will cause the sore to disappear. Me	Ice is a very good home remedy for cold sores. Rub ice on the infected skin for few minutes, repeat this every hour Apply a tea bag for few minutes on the blisters, repeat this every hour.
