Antibiotics really don't do anything for ear infections most doctors want even place a child on them for EI's however there is some OTC medications that you can purchase at your local drug store for earaches. It's a numbing type of drop for your childs ear and actually helps with the pain. Ask your RX about it.
Ear infections are from drainage from colds and some drs even suggest that it's from children being around smokers. But do check that OTC medication out it works!!

my grandmother's answer would have been warm sweet oil for the discomfort. A caution here alot depends on the age of the patient. It is wisest to use this tpe of thing if the patient can tell you if they can taste the oil after it is put in. I would think that if you have an antibiotic a physician has looked at the tympanic membranes and they are intact. therefore the patient would not taste the oil. a little Motrin would probably be the safest choice. minimal dose for age and weight.

Put your hair drier on a soft Gentle low heat and blow it into the ear. This will alleviate the pain somewhat immediatley.

Tylenol or Motrin is probably one of your best bets. Doseage according to the side of the bottle by approximate age or weight. If the ear still hurts terribly, call your doctor for some aurlgan drops. They help numb the ear.
The ear Drops are only if your kid has a middle ear infection, not a perforated ear drum. In other words you want to make sure the ear drum is intact before using any kind of drops unless your doctor told you to use them.

Similison? I guess its not exactly a home remedy, bc u have to buy it from the store. BUT, it has worked instantly for pain relief.

Children's Tylenol usually eases the pain and fever while the antibiotics work. You should see improvement with the antibiotics within 48 hours if not, call MD back.

Mullein oil is very good.
Warmth helps- I used to get chronic ear infections and my mom would let me borrow her heating pad to lay my head on. It would increase the pain for a few minutes, but then it would feel much better afterwards.
You didn't say how old your child is; but from one parent to another, be aware that cow's milk causes more ear infections in infants and toddlers than anything else.

I like Mullein Oil. Most brands also have Garlic in them, a natural antibiotic. Mullein is great to relieve the pain and inflammation. Just put the drops in a stainless steel spoon and warm over a flame for a few seconds. (Test by dropping on your wrist - should not be more than slightly warm.) Three to five drops in the ear, every 4 hours as needed. Opened bottle must be kept refrigerated. Wally's Ear Oil is a good brand, or Herbs, Etc.
Also pure essential Lavender oil, applied in front of the ear and behind the ear lobe, to relieve inflammation and ease pain. Works instantly.

my mom would use olive oil she would put like a tiny drop inside and a cotton ball so air wouldnt get inside.

Try the over the counter numbing medication. You can also buy buckwheat hull pillows, they come in kid friendly character shapes. Put the pillow in the microwave for a minute or so and let your child lay his head on it. If you can't find one just make one with rice. I know it sounds crazy but it helped my son.

There is a homeopathic line called Hylands and they have earache tablets that you put underneath your child's tongue. They work great. I used them for my daughter when she was teething also...
Also try a heating pad... or Motrin.
