Please don’t eat meat for a reason it may be containing lot of diseases prone things !Secondly animals are not for man to eat !Now other things in nature is green vegetables contain lot of iron and your system will absorb this natural iron more happily !Green and more brown vegetable and Chlorophyll do contains iron !one more thing if iron taken un necessarily for a long term it will have a cumulative effect in the liver !one more that if iron is taken alone than it may not get absorbed !If taken with vitamin C which promotes its absorption !You will surprise to know that there is a Iron block mechanism in our intestine which do not allow iron to get absorbed for that day if daily requirement is done You should know that iron alone is not capable for hemoglobin to rise !vitamin B12 and protein also should be taken !simultaneously! Red meats are the single best dietary source of iron. Furthermore, the "heme" iron found in meats is one of the most bioavailable (e.g. easily absorbed) forms of iron.
That being said dark, leafy green vegetables and legumes are your next best bet. While there are fair levels of iron in these plants it is not well absorbed due to a number of factors. However, these foods are also high in a number of other beneficial nutrients which can help in a number of ways.
Supplement-wise.. you should look at those products with chelated iron. You'll get more from these than you will from products using ferrous Fumarate, oxides or other inorganic forms. Look for something that contains about 50-75% of the Rda per dose and take it in two doses throughout the day. You'll get better absorption if you take them with food, particularly milk and vitamin C.
If your stools turn dark and have a tarry consistency then you are excreting most of your supplemental iron. Try taking smaller doses more frequently.
While you can get adequate iron from vegetable sources it takes quite some effort. Supplements will probably be your most convenient method, though I still encourage lots of those leafy, green veggies and beans.

I personally would never go back to a doctor that recommends lots of meat for iron poor blood. if this is a long term dietary plan then you are heading for cholesterol problems and heart and artery disease. also high meat intake is associated with many cancers. better to eat beans, dark green veggies, nuts, dark purple raisens and prunes/and maybe some meat. seafood and chicken is better than red meat

Great question.
Meat is a great source of iron, only trouble is you deplete it when you start to cook the meat. And your body doesn't absorb it very well.
A better source of iron is leafy green vegetables. Broccoli, spinach, and the like.
I've not eaten meat for over 15 years and have no problems with my iron levels.
I do take a supplement every day, but it's a whole food supplement that is derived from real fruits and vegetables not synthetic vitamins.

All the best.

Even worse, we know that he really said "eat a lot of liver." Eating spinach is a myth due to a miscalculation a long time ago. There are iron supplements and you might not be real happy with how you digest them (to put it politely). You have to take in a lot because iron is somewhat hard to adsorb into the body. Please do one or the other because the energy rewards and other health benefits are pretty good.

Seafood provide more iron than meat. However, vitamins are different from iron. Iron comes under minerals. So, take a multivitamin With Minerals included or if you are taking an only vitamins pill, add an extra iron pill. Liver has high iron content too.

I have a suggestion and a warning for iron. Others have mentioned spinach for iron, but do NOT eat spinach if you are diabetic it can actually be bad for you.
Now, for the best over the counter natural iron source you can get. Blackstrap molasses. One tablespoon contains a whopping 70% of your daily value of iron. Blackstrap molasses can also be a tasty treat on cereal or other foods. it is also reported to have many many other health benefits.
