The best remedy I know is gargling with water soaked in chopped up Garlic. Strain off the Garlic before gargling. You can do this as often as you need. Garlic is a natural infection fighter.

Warm tea with honey and lemon... sucking on hard candies or lollipops... if it gets really bad, put a teaspoon of bourbon in that tea.
Edit - (Oh, crud!) I totally forgot about the warm salt water!!! She's right. It tastes horrible, the tea/lemon/honey is much better, but the warm salt water is actually curative as well as Pain Relieving....

peppermint tea with Sage
Ginger tea with a small amt of lemon and honey
Ginger, Cinnamon, Cardamom, and honey tea
eat something with as many raw cloves of Garlic crushed into it as possible. I do this (and the teas, too) and it works well. I usually crush 4-5 cloves into my spaghetti sauce... at night so I don't knock out anyone!

Gargling with salt water to help dispel any bacteria that could be the cause of it-and honey is an excellent sore throat soother. It is also a natural antiseptic. You can either take the honey straight, or mix it in some lukewarm water with a little cayenne pepper-the capsacin in peppers help block the "pain" signals in cells.
