Sometimes, people who have trouble sleeping at night are not getting enough exercise during the day. You should be getting 30 minutes of continuous exercise every day. This will then cause fatigue at the end of the day, thus promoting more restful sleep. Second, avoid any caffeine after 4-6 pm, you may have to bump it back to 3 pm. You can reprogram your sleep patterns. Do not go to bed until you are tired. It may take a few nights of staying up until you are ready to fall asleep but eventually, you will be fatigued enough to go to sleep at a decent hour. Do not go to bed too early. Plan for only 8 hours of sleep time. Do not take any naps during the day. Try drinking some cammomile tea one hour before bedtime. You don't have to go to a doctor in order to solve a sleep problem. Taking 4 pills at bedtime means they are no longer working and you need to stop doing this.

Sleeping pills aren't the answer to sleeping problems.
You need to try and relax before bed. Take a warm bath and listen to a relaxation tape, do some relaxation exercises. Concentrate on your breathing and grounding yourself. Very many sleep disorders are related to poor breathing.
If you smoke or live or work in a smoky or poluted environment this will add to your sleep disturbances. Noise doesn't help either.
Try other remedies, camomile tea, a warm drink will help you to calm down at the end of the day. Some people swear by lettuce sandwiches, don't ask me, just a report that I read.
5-HTP may help with anxiety and sleeplessness. However, I find it has a hangover effect as well - ie I am more sleepy in the mornings as well.
btw - I count sheep if I can't sleep. ;-)

The best is what you don't want to be told and hear, "see your doctor" as fast as you can. Self medication especially when it does not work is dangerous practice as all medications have their side effects. Stop, Nicotine, caffien, alcohal, drugs. Have balance diet, excersize and try to have a regularity of bed time, but still consult with your doctor.

Try taking one 50 mg nighttime sleep Aid capsule (I use 50 mg Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride store brand softgel, like walgreens or cvs) along with one 3 mg Melatonin tablet about 30 min before you go to bed. I used to be in the same situation as you, but this knocks me out.

I hate to tell you, but the doctor would be the answer. What makes me help fall asleep is reading a book. I read about this in an article, that reading at night relaxes the mind and helps you fall asleep faster. Also try listening to music while laying in bed. It helps me very well.

You shouldn't go to bed until your pill starts to kick in. Sometimes it take up to an hour for some of these pills to work. You also may need something to help you relax. Are you having other health problems like pain or anxiety? If you are you may need a muscle relaxer like zanax or Valium this will also help you sleep too.

If you won't go see a Dr., then I gather you are not take prescription pills???
Not knowing your age, some ideas...
For one try not to eat 2 hours before you go to bed. But a warm glass of milk is ok. Often helps alot for several reasons, the Calcium in the milk, as well as tryptopan.
My formula for sleeping, are 2 Calcium tabs, a Magnesium tab, and 2 Valerian caps. Since I am over 50 I also take Melatonin. Take your "sleeping" meds at least an hour before bed. Also drink a cup of Chamomile tea, which will help you relax.
I also take some Advil gel caps, but that is cause I am over 50!
