In My oppinion.
you should:
Close your eyes lightly.
Watch tv so that your eyes get tired.
make sure that you've gotten all the energy out of you before going to bed.
(Isuggest that you play hard and have as much fun as possible)
all of those should in fact help a little.

Try taking a hot shower before trying to go to bed. Have some carbs (bread-rice-pasta-etc..) , it makes you feel relaxed & sleepy.
Try jogging untill you feel tired. Move alot during the day & don't eat chocolate or drink pepsi/coke/coffee/tea.
Make sure your room is quite & dark.
Lite up some scented candles (vanilla & peach for example).
And most of all, force yourself to wake up early, even if you didn't sleep enough. If you hold yourself for ONE day, hopefully your problem is be easily solved.
Good luck sweetie :X

I put a cool washcloth over my forehead and part eyelids...it relaxes my mind...sounds like you are thinking too much about the stress in your life...did you look into a tutor to help you get a passing grade? do you like music? play it softly until you go to sleep...are your curtains pulled shut to keep out light? try stretching out your body like yoga style and take deep breaths...clear your mind of the stress...walk around alittle before sleep time...are you going to bed at the same time everynight? wiggle your foot....don't eat any food before going to bed...tilt your head slowly around the world/sideways to Loosen any tension...talk to someone before you tuck in...get anything off your mind.....now go to sleep......

i know your only 13, but do you drink coffee? if so quit. Pop or chocolate, anything with cafein or high amounts of sugar will keep you up at night. also dont watch TV or play video games for an hour before you need to go to bed. try reading a book instead.
If this isnt the case it might stress related.
you could also try some exercise in the early evening, jog or hike sports whatever, should help you fall asleep

You should ask you parents to get a second opinion from another doctor.
It sounds a lot like you may have sleep apnea (look it up).
It can be very serious if not treated properly, and taking some kind of sleep medication would be the WRONG thing to do!

1. An hour or two before going to bed, sit down for at least 10 minutes or so. Reflect on the day's activities and try to put them into some perspective. Review your stresses and strains, as well as your problems. Write them down on a piece of paper and put the piece of paper on your dresser or throw it away. This may help you get things off your mind that might help you fall asleep faster.
2. Avoid coffee, cola's, chocolate (as that contains caffeine too), as well as smoking and alcohol at night. Try not to consume these things past 4:00 pm.
3. Drink a glass of warm milk before bed and avoid sugary snacks that can excite your system or heavy meals that can stress your body.
4. Learn and practice relaxation techniques. Try to buy one of those relaxation music CD's from a music/relaxation shop and listen to it for 30 mins to an hour before planning to going to bed. This will help you relax and help you fall asleep faster.
5. My doctor also recommended that I take a natural herb called "Valerian" which I take an hour before going to bed with a cuppa tea. You can have a look at the following website for more information on it:

I like to read a little before i go to bed to calm my nerves, dont eat anything at least 2 hours before going to bed (that means no snacks), don't watch tv or play video games or get on Yahoo before bed, no exercising before bed, no naps during the day (that means no nodding of in class), and I hear that sleeping on your left side is good for some reason.

I am not a doctor but I have suffered from insomnia too. Here are some things I did that helped me with my insomnia:
Cut out decaffeinated drinks - no Colas, coffee, tea
Watch what you eat - cut out the chocolate or only eat a little
Exercise regularly
Do yoga
Have a bath with a blend of relaxing essential oils
Try putting relaxing essential oils on a tissue and put in your pillow case
Try free writing - sometimes it help you to understand what your problems are
Go to your local health food store and find a recommendation for herbal remedies
Better yet contact a Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctor
or a Naturalpathic Doctor
(although it will be more expensive than a regular doctor - they get to the root of the problem rather than covering the symptoms)
Get regular massages
Spend time with people who make you feel good
The key to success is trying many of these suggestions - not just one or two. It may seem like a lot but in order to get good results you need to make big changes.
I hope this helps.
Wishing you success in your quest for sleep.

Stop any caffeine or energy drinks right now!! Do not drink anything like that after lunch. That means no Mountain Dew, no coffee, capaccino, espresso Diet coke, anything with caffeine. Go to bed at the same time each night. Take care of homework, chores, etc, long before bedtime. Give yourself at least a half hour to do calming rountine things to prepare for sleep like, moisturize your face, take a warm bath, drink a glass of warm milk. You might also want to try a cup of Chamomile tea. It is a natural sedative and is very calming, tastes mildly of apple and is great with a bit of honey in it. I get mine at GNC(I am picky and have found the best for me there.) Make sure you are warm enough, plenty of covers and that your room is cool and dark. Now that it is winter, if you live in a cold climate, it may be dry in your room. Get a humidifier. Now, go to sleep. If it ain't gonna happen, don't worry. that makes it worse. Read a book, nothing for school, strictly entertainment. Or play quiet music and lay quietly listening to it. Keep lights out for the music thing. Even laying quietly gives you some rest. Give these thing a week or so to work. if sleep just isn't going to happen, request a second opinion . You may be depressed. Think, is something or someone bothering you? Do you find yourself thinking about a particular thing night after night? Maybe you need a counselor. You could be low in iron. While you are at it, make sure you are taking adaily vitiman. Most teenagers could use one because, like most kids, they eat weird. Try to attack the problem as an investigator. Think, what could be the problem. If you truely don't want the heavy drugs, give solving the problem yourself a try. It can't hurt and you won't be any worse off than before.

There are alot of good natural remedies and relaxation techniques, there are also good non-narcotic medications. Unfortunately no one is going to be able to tell which is the best for you. Also what works well this month may not seem to work next month. Insomnia has many causes and can take many forms. You need to learn as much about the condition as possible. Then you need to talk with your doctor and discuss your options. More than likely it will be a full program not one technique or medication. If you truly are not comfortable with the way your current doctor is handling the situation, find a health care professional you are comfortable with. The American Insomnia Association is a good place to start. I have included a link. I wish you the best of luck.

My sister used valerian Root, it is a very good herbal remedy and it worked great on my teenager who had dreadful sleeping problems.
It does take a week or so to get into your system but when it started to work, it worked very well.

you can do light exercise before going to bed like stretches or jumping jacks
when in bed, lie on your back and concentrate on breathing for a few minutes, try to move your breath into various areas of your body, try breathing towards your head and feet, and then try up and down raising your belly as far up and as far down as possible trying to go further every time
you should be able to fall asleep very easily after this and should sleep undisturbed and be very rested upon waking, you also won't need as much sleep to be fully energized either

I have been suffering with insomnia for 12 years. Recently my Dr. gave me a sleep hypnosis CD. I couldn't believe how well it worked. You can find downloads just by doing a search for "sleep hypnosis".
As far as herbal remedies I had success with Valerian for a while and Chamomile. My problem is things work for a while and then not anymore. Currently I am taking prescription meds. There are also oils such as Lavender, jasmine, and Chamomile. Good Luck!

How horrible! It is awful when your body is causing such turmoil.
Are you feeling more and more away after 10:00 pm or so? If so, this may have something to do with your adrenal glands.
Also, like others have said, maybe apnea.
So, check out all medical possibilities before you take meds. Google about hyper-adrenalism and hypo-adrenalism and see if any symptoms fit. (Check out the symptoms for Thyroid, while you are at it, to be sure.) Then see and endocrinologist if there is a similarity.
In the meantime, I've found that Chamomile tea and Tension Tamer Tea from Celestial Seasonings really helps feeling sleepy. Also, I have heard that Valerian is very effective. I think it is super stinky, but I guess you can plug your nose.
As a final note, make sure that you are not having a drop of caffeine during the day. No soda, no chocolate, no coffee, no caffeine teas. One sip can make a difference, if you are sensitive. Also, being really, really busy or physical during the day can help.
