The best way to reduce the discomfort of sore throat is to take pain meds like Tylenol or Advil (acetominofen or Ibuprofen).
Warm beverages and soups are also soothing to the throat.
Gargling with warm salt water is effective at soothing and also for helping to reduce the viral infection. Good oral hygiene when you are sick is also good -- brushing your teeth and using antiseptic Mouthwash (like Listerine brand) are helpful to reduce the level of viruses in your mouth.
There are also tons of products such as throat lozenges and throat sprays that are soothing. For lozenges, I have found that the most effective active ingredient is:
hexylresorcinol
But there are not very many products that have it. Instead you will probably be able to find products containing other active ingredients.
The brand Cepacol is generally the most effective lozenges available (in the USA). Here is their website:

There is a pressure point located in between your ring finger and middle finger. Take a pen and irrate the area between your knuckles on both hands quite a few times a day. Within hours this should take away your sore throat.

A lot of the answers given are good; here's my 2 cents. 1. Keep away from anything cold--to eat or drink--because it's bad for the throat. 2. Take a lot of vit.C regularly, at least 500mg every few hours. 3. From personal experience I find that hitting the cold with everything at once helps: vitamins, Ginger tea, Zinc, Nyquil (or something similar), etc. The length of time it takes a cold to leave your body depends on how strong your immune system is to begin with, and the strain of the cold virus (which seems to be mutating constantly). Oh yes, keep in mind that ANY illness puts your body under stress, so after the cold is over YOU'RE AT YOUR WEAKEST! Keep taking care of yourself or you're likely to get another cold, or something else!

Chicken soup works temporarily. So does spicy food and Orange juice. The best medicine for a cold, though is rest and fluid and plenty of it just no beer and no milk if you are coughing. also avoid chocolate.

Boil sliced gingerroot in a pan of water, let it boil about 20 min, then strain out and discard the gingerroot pieces. Drink the water piping hot, sweetened with honey. Ginger will help your throat, and the honey is a natural antibiotic. (Anytime you're under the weather, so to speak, sweeten things with honey instead of sugar so your body can get all the help you can give it to fight off whatever you caught.)
Be sure you're using a Decongestant. If you don't like or can't use commercial ones for whatever reason, slice up a big Onion in thin slices. Put most of the slices in a plastic bag, but put a few on a plate and carry it around with you. hen the smell wears off from those slices, discard them and get new ones from the bag. Yes, you'll stink, but your head will be cleared up in no time. Don't let the crud accumulate in your head; that leads to infections which take even longer than colds to go away.
Drink plenty of water and juice, and be sure you get extra rest so your body can heal itself as quickly as possible.

sleep will speed up your recovery
if you put too much junk in your body, to fight the cold, you're wasting your time. you're already using decent stuff.
also, by use of the word quickly, i would assume that you're stressed that you won't get over the cold fast enough. believe it or not, stress will delay your recovery

a remedy that i know for all of that though, is 1/3 part water, 1/3 part honey, and 1/3 part vinager. it smells like easter egg dye, but tastes ok. one teaspoon every hour. it soothes the sore throat, and actually decreases the runny nose
