Nancy P	JEEZ - she's 89 years old! so what if her voice is raspy.. She has a voice; she's breathing; she's alive. You want her to have TESTS to check it out - WHY?! At 89 do you think she'll do anything about it? Do you know how unpleasant those TESTS are? My 77 year old mom has already told me (and I was glad) that if she's diagnosed with breast cancer (runs in our family) she's not going to do anything about it. So why go thru the darn tests?? Leave your mother alone! Let her be done with tests and hospitals and doctors!!! Just listen and don't pay attention when she clears her throat. Just be happy she's still here for you to ***** about! Mark K	It sounds to me like polyps.Tiny growths that could be related to all those years of smoking. She could really do herself a favor and possibly prevent a serious condition like throat cancer by having it checked out. Your Mom is in denial. Was this answer helpful to you? Yes / No

turkeybrooknj	I had the same thing and I am much younger. I have a post nasal drip and also acid reflux, which I have no symptoms of, other than the throat clearing. I guess it is somehow related to the throat and raspiness but I would have never guessed it because I had heard that acid reflux had to do with not being able to swallow food or something with the esophogus. The allergist said to try not to keep clearing my throat but, it is difficult because of the drip. He said that I should get some hard candy or throat lozenges and suck on them because it helps with the dryness and with the feeling to clear the throat constantly. It does work. consumery	At 89, your mom should be seeing a specialist for this problem! And her doc should not be complaining. It's his DUTY to send her to a specialist. No matter what the problem is, she is 89, probably getting stubborn about it, and very much needs someone to step in on her account. alpro33	Politely ask your mother if she would like to have this problem cleared up. Then take her to see an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist. Today with Medicare you don't need a referral from her doctor. It could be so many different problems that you should quit guessing and get moving. Was this answer helpful to you? Yes / No

jayefris	my mom does the same thing.She was in her late 70's when it started. Her doc sent her to a specialist and she has acid reflux, but without the usual stomach upset and heartburn. It has something to do with the esophagus. She started taking nexuim and had to change her diet. Semms to work as long as she eats right and takes her meds Was this answer helpful to you? Yes / No
