If this is a prescription drug straight off of an over-the-counter pharmacist, start taking the drug, especially if you need it. A doctor is probably the one that knows what is best for you and you should listen to their advice. Not everyone would get addicted though, so if you do, you could ask someone to help you (preferably the doctor who prescribed the medicine to you). |

obviously if a doctor presribes it to you they mean it with the best intentions.... unless your mom is a doctor in the medical field than you should listen to your doctor when it comes to health |

I'm assuming since you asked this in the alternative medicine category, that you want an alternative, not just a bunch of well wishers telling you to listen to your doctor. There are alternatives, but you and your mom need to be on the same page. We need to know what your symptoms were that you were prescribed Xanax for, and she needs to see all our answers too. There will be several options from herbs to homeopathy, and all will be arguably safer. A good option to asking here: Can you get your mom to take you to a naturopath instead of an MD? They will be able to give you a better diag and remedy option that isn't an addictive drug. I know that insurance doesn't usually cover a naturopath, but they are usually a lot cheaper than an MD anyway. I know your mom isn't an MD, and I think it is rude that people tell you to listen to the doc over your mom. She is your mother, she has the best intentions for you. It is yours and your mother's decision whether to follow the advice the doctor gave you. The doctor isn't God, and he could be wrong. The ultimate treatment decision, barring life and death, should be in the hands of an informed patient. Get back to us with more info and we'll help you sort out the options. The alternative medicine community would love to help you stay off harmful prescription medicine and address your issue in a safe manner. |

"Alprazolam [Xanax] is FDA-approved for the short term treatment (up to 8 weeks) of panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia. Alprazolam is very effective in preventing moderate to severe anxiety, essential tremor, panic attacks and other types of convulsive behaviors. Physicians who elect to prescribe Alprazolam for longer than 8 weeks should be aware that continued efficacy has not been systematically demonstrated beyond 8 weeks use as tolerance to Alprazolam's effects may occur after 8 weeks and necessitate discontinuation or physician-directed dose escalation. However, long-term maintenance therapy on Alprazolam is not unheard-of in the medical community, and, if a genuine therapeutic need exists, benefits must be weighed against risks. Alprazolam is [also] recommended for the short-term treatment (2-4 weeks) of severe acute anxiety. Alprazolam should only very rarely be used for longer periods of time -- the body becomes rapidly tolerant to the drug's effects, which may translate to decreased efficacy. Decreased efficacy can lead to dose escalation, and the use of high doses puts the patient at higher risk for withdrawal if the drug is discontinued suddenly." |

most of the drug addicts in this country got addicted by doctors giving them meds for one thing or another. Anxiety can be dealt with quite well with exercise and diet. Your mother is correct this is a very addictive drug and you need to learn to deal with life not run from it. This might make it easy for a bit but kicking this kind of drug is hell. |

Your Mom isn't a doctor Yiu can get addicted to these things but it depends on how long the doctor will treat you for whatever you are taking them for Im guessing general anxiety or Insomnia If you have any concerns about addictions , discuss them with your doctor , not your Mom Short term use as prescribed will not result in addiction Good luck |

Yeah, neither does Tom Cruise. Tell them that a Doctor knows better and to shut the hell up! |

It is one of the hardest medications to get off of. I suffered from panic disorder for 5 years and was on them that entire time. I had to go into a hospital to get off of them as the panic was stopping but trying to get off of them was HELL. Thing is though, if the disorder came back, I'd take them again because they helped me and I'd go through the same old humiliating thing coming off of them as opposed to going through the panic. |

All medicines have side effects over long term. If you want to reduce/avoid using Xanax, start doing these exercises (pranayam).Tell mom to do pranayam as well and you can compare notes.Keep taking the medicine and review the situation weekly, to see if you want to reduce the dose of medicine.Over long term you will not need the medicine if you have been doing the pranayam. Build up your timing gradually. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and resume after one minute. Anulom Vilom – Close your right nostril with thumb and deep breath-in through left nostril then – close left nostril with two fingers and breath-out through right nostril then -keeping the left nostril closed deep breath-in through right nostril then - close your right nostril with thumb and breath-out through left nostril. This is one cycle of anulom vilom. Repeat this cycle for 20 to 30 minutes twice a day(maximum 60 minutes in one day). You can do this before breakfast/lunch/dinner or before bedtime or in bed.Remember to take deep long breaths into the lungs. You can do this while sitting on floor or chair or lying in bed. Kapalbhati -(Do it before eating) Push air forcefully out through the nose about once per second. Stomach will itself go in(contract in). The breathing in(through the nose) will happen automatically. Establish a rhythm and do for 20 to 30 minutes twice a day.(Max 60 min/day) Not for pregnant women. Seriously ill people do it gently. |

xanax is very addictive, but i have anxiety and Xanax is the ONLY thing that has helped me. i take .25 mg twice a day and .5 mg at bedtime. as long as you stick to the prescribed amount and be careful not to allow yourself to up the dosage or take more than you need you should be fine. i have been on the same dose for 5 years. in the beginning this drug will make you tired and giddy, but after a few weeks this feeling will wear off a bit, don't allow yourself to take more just because it stops making you feel great, it is still working even if you don't feel it as strong. also once you start taking Xanax regularly do not just quit taking it. you must taper off of it,with medical supervision. quitting cold turkey can give you seizures. good luck. |

Hi Chris. I must disagree with some of the others here. Listen to your mom! Xanax does NOT CURE any condition or underlying pathology. It only masks symptoms. Taking an addictive drug to temporarily mask symptoms (and to NOT look for and treat the cause of those symptoms) is always BAD medicine (although this is very common medicine). Best wishes and good luck. |

Take the Xanax as prescribed. It will help tremendously with your worry. It is a very effective remedy for severe anxiety and panic. You will be feeling better soon, and everything with your mom and concerns about the medicine will be easier to deal with. |
