Gingeroot. This, says Dr. Mowrey, is the most helpful. "I've seen it work often enough that I'm convinced," he says. "We're not sure how it works, but it seems to absorb the acid and have the secondary effect of calming the nerves," he says. Take it in capsule form just after you eat. Start with two capsules and increase the dosage as needed. You know you've taken enough, says Dr. Mowrey, when you start to taste Ginger in your throat.
Bitters. A class of herbs called bitters, used for many years in parts of Europe, is also helpful, Dr. Mowrey says. Examples of common bitters are Gentian root, Wormwood, and Goldenseal. "I can vouch that they work," says Dr. Mowrey. Bitters can be taken in capsule form or as a liquid extract, just before you eat.
Apple cider vinegar. Outside the herb family, an oft-touted remedy for heartburn is 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in 1/2 glass of water sipped during a meal. "I've used it many times—it definitely works," says Betty Shaver, a lecturer on herbal and home remedies at the New Age Health Spa in Neversink, New York. It may sound bizarre to ingest an acid when you have an acid problem, admits Shaver, but "there are good acids and bad acids," she says.
What's wrong with milk and mints? Mints are one of several foods that tend to relax your lower esophageal sphincter, or LES, the little valve whose job it is to keep acid in your stomach—and the little lid that can often protect you even when you do overindulge.
And what's wrong with milk? It's this: Fats, proteins, and Calcium in milk can stimulate the stomach to secrete acid. "Some people recommend milk for heartburn—but there's a problem with it," says Dr. Klein. "It feels good going down, but it does stimulate acid secretion in the stomach.

First you should know whether or not your husband has "simple heartburn". That it is not associated with other symptoms or conditions such as an ulcer. You are on the right track with the vinegar....raw organic apple cider vinegar 2-4 TB before meals(you can get this in capsule form at a health food store), digestive Enzymes, Acidophilus Bifidus (in Kefir [like yogurt] also at a health food store, eat more raw fruits & veggies & finally have him try stress reducing techniques. Vinegar is a weaker acid than that of the ph in your stomach(ph 1-2) and thus thoretically it would make the contents of your stomache less acid which would lessen the irritation of the stomache wall ---> where the pain is coming from. For bad heartburn try taking 1-2 tabs of Alka Seltzer GOLD dissolved in a glass of water (not any of the others)-this too helps neutralize the acid in your stomach. Hope this helps. If he hasn't seen a doctor yet he should be checked out before trying home remedies.

GO TO A CHIROPRACTOR
everything being listed above are only temporary fixes, none of which are solving the problem of WHY he has heartburn.
First you must ask yourself why is his body producing too little or much acid.
go to a CHIROPRACTOR, if there is an iterference of signals from his brain to his stomuch, he will not produce the correct amount of acid. For example, if he eats a cheeseburger, but his brain thinks its an apple, it will not be digested properly.
these nerves exit the spine through the vertebrea, if there are misalignment at that particular spot the nerves will be compromised, thus interfering with the signals from the brain...

Ginger Ale works best for me. But any carbonated soda can help. Something about the way the carbination reacts with the acid.
Milk is actually doesn't work as well because the body processes it as a solid and generates more acid.

Aloe Vera juice is usually effective. But he may just have a hiatal hernia - if so, he should be careful not to recline or lie down for an hour after eating or drinking, so the acid/stomach contents don't flow up into the esophagus.

911callgirl pretty well covered things but forgot to mention that Peppermint does a decent job. After all; that's why so many restaurants have them available<G>. On a more serious note if the heartburn is a regular occurance he needs to see a doctor! It's fairly common for heart trouble to show up as heartburn (I learned the hard way!).

I own a health food store and had both heartburn and ulcers in my past. I would suggest buying some flax Seed Oil and taking a spoonful or tablets if he doesn't like the nutty flavor. This will help the symptoms and will be good for his heart and hormone regulation.
But my guess is he is probably not eating right and under stress. He needs exercise, I strongly suggest Yoga, or Tai-Chi as they to not overly amp up the body or otherwise wear it down.
As for his eating I suggest giving up meat but not everyone will go for that. Go for smaller meals, leave out the junk food, chips, Twinkies, pop, etc. Coffee and pop are highly acidic, avoid like the plague. Ultimately if he is not willing to change his habits he will suffer until he is willing to.
Western medicine can cover the symptoms but they will just resurface later and often in nastier ways. To reduce his stress by encouraging him to give himself affirmations like, “It's going to be ok" and "It'll all work out".
In the mean time try the flax oil. Aloe juice is an ok second alternative and would be great in conjunction. Good luck. Feel free to let me know how it worked. Believe in these things as I am living proof. In the alternative health field the more you believe the more effective they are because you are not only more likely to keep the routine but you are also not blocking the healing energies but you own negatively generated ones. Hope that helps you hubbie. Best of wishes.
P.S. stay away from Tums, etc, like they are eboli on crack. They cause your body to over compensate and you end up in the end eating more & more tablets ending up terribly addicted to them. At one point I had to drink Malox every 10 minutes. It was only then I realized something was wrong with the system. Sometime I think the pharmaceutical companies do this crap on purpose. Do they really make their money getting people better or keeping people dependent? I have heard the pharmaceutical companies spend more money in advertising than all the health food companies put together. That should tell you something right there.

Okay, well here's the simple answer: yes, vinegar does work and here's why!:
When people have heartburn, while most people believe that they are making too much acid-- this is usually not true- they are most likely making too LITTLE acid.
What happens when you eat is that the food travels down your esophagus to your stomach where acid pumps are turned on to further digest and liquify the food. When your body is making too little acid, the food does not completely digest and the body tries to reverse the food, sending it back to your esophagus. This time when the food is traveling back, it has acid mixed with it (way too much acid for the esophagus to handle) and you get a 'burning' sensation.
So actually your body needs to generate MORE acid, so that it can digest food properly--this is where vinegar comes into play.
Vinegar is extremely acidic, so much so that when drinking it alone it immediately sends a signal to your body that it is not making enough acid. So what happens?--you guessed it, the stomach begins to produce more acid! This stops the food from re-entering the esophagus, ending heartburn!
So try vinegar-- a few tablespoons is all he needs. Don't try bases like milk, or foods like bread as these will only 'band-aid' the problem and not solve it!!
Hope this helps!!

Hi there...
Seems to me like he may not be digesting his food properly.
He should try taking a digestive Enzyme supplement before every meal and snack to help break down his food. He is right on in not wanting to take "medicine" for the problem, as many prescription and over the counter medications can actually compound the problem. It's fraudulent advertising at best, potentially criminal...but that's another story...
Check out www.wellzymes.com - these are natural products and are also 100% vegetarian. I'd try the digestive health product to begin with - just taking a digestive Enzyme with my food really helped me out.
Also, the gastric ease product includes digestive Enzymes, but also has Marshmallow root and aloe vera extracts to help soothe the gastrointestinal lining - you may actually try one of those extracts by themselves in the meantime.
Hope this helps!
