Hi there,
I found theraputic doses of a good quality fish oil worked like a charm! By fish oil I do not mean Cod liver. That's ok but if you already take a multi-Vitamin that has a lot of Vit A in it you will want to avoid cod liver: it has a lot of vit A and too much can be toxic. I use NutraSea brand fish oil. It has one of the highest concentrations of epa and Dha and is available in gelcap or liquid form. Liquid is not bad as it is lemon flavoured; you only get a "fishy" taste if you burp it up later!
Per 1 tsp. serving:
• 5000mg herring oil
• 1500mg total omega-3s
• 775mg epa
• 500mg Dha
• 225mg other omega-3s
Now, a "theraputic" dose is 3000-4000mg each day. For me, that was 1 tsp morning, after work when I got home and at dinner. It isn't the cheapest brand out there but if you like to shop around you can find stores that do sell it cheaper than others. My triglycerides were quite high, HDL down, LDL elevated as well. After a few months the levels were back into a "normal" range. Even my doctor was shocked and, like you, he did not want to put me on a statin drug (they can have nasty side effects!) unless absolutely necessary.
The other part of the equation is diet. Eating fatty foods is not a problem unless you already have a predisposition to high cholesterol. Dietary cholesterol does not impact blood cholesterol but again, if you have a medical history of elevated lipid levels, then you'll want to watch things. Otherwis, try to keep the sugars to a minimum especially the refined "white" crap; likewise, try to avoid the starchy carbs such as white flour, pasta and rice. Whole grain is by far a better and healthier option. With me, I did Atkins so I'm not a fan of any heavy starches until the sugar addictions kicks in. Then it's all about the fries!
Hope this helps.
Cheers.

Do some investigation on this product called MISTICA. It contains the Acai' berry and some other powerful berries that help to lower cholesterol and blood pressure. It is all natural, no additives, no sugar, just berries. I do not believe in drugs, I believe there is always an all natural alternative. I hope this helps you.

A ketogenic diet will bring it down. The problem lies not in fats but in sugar intake.

I am a 41 yo male in otherwise good health. I was at 211 in February, with 60 LDL (good). My doc said that I had 2 bad reports in a row, so I needed to do something to get it down or start taking a statin. So, here is what I am doing: Eat fatty fish at least 3 times a week. I eat canned sardines most days for lunch. Cut out all eggs. Cut red meat back to once a week, except venison. Very limited bacon, sausage, cheese, etc. Started taking Red Yeast Rice (1,200 mg per day). I now eat at least a tablespoon of Benocol per day. Smart Balance also works, but according to Johns Hopkins, its effects lessen after a few months use. I also eat oatmeal 3-4 times per week. I maintained my excercise level at 5 days per week, 45 minutes per day. My cholesterol dropped to 155 in 4 months, 44 LDL and 10 triglicerides. Good luck.
