Is smoking really that bad?
About half of my school probably smokes, and everybody seems just fine. I've heard that it slows down your performance, memory, pretty much everything but everybody seems still pretty active and fast. NO I'm not smoking no do I ever want to, but is smoking as bad as people say it is?

Please honest answers, not just mumbo jumbo "Yeah it does this and that and bla bla bla." Like how long does it take for results to show.
Additional Details
Like I said, no "They do this and that and......" which half of you people said that. I really think that it's over exaggerating, because my friend smokes and he's still pretty bright, besides for the smoking part.

UH, DUH! The effects of smoking can take years, so of course you probably won't see the effects in your classmates. Obviously you need some education on Smoking! Check with the American Cancer Society & then re-ask your question!

Yea it is that bad. You are right no one acts like it but when they run you can hear it in there breathing when they do anything sometimes even just walking or sitting still they have heavy breathing. I know because I smoke but I shouldn't. But anyways yes it is terrible and take advice from a smoker don't let anyone talk you into it like I did. Don't be stupid and think it's kool either cuz it really is not.

YES, smoking is really bad for you!
You may not notice right away, but the effects will show over time.
If you smoke a cigarette per day over the course of a week, sure, you probably won't notice much more than a slight buzz each time you have a smoke.
Now, imagine smoking one, or three, or more cigarettes a day over the course of years and years. That becomes hundreds and thousands of cigarettes, and every time you smoke one you are sending more of that stuff into your lungs. Not to mention, your addiction becomes stronger and stronger and you smell bad and have to spend a lot of money.
I really can't think of any good reason to be a smoker.

Yes it is. It depends on how frequent you smoke but it fills your lungs up with tar and eventually you won't be able to breath anymore without tubes.

It also increases your chances of cancer[lung cancer! which is the deadliest cancer!].

Angelina's Mommy
Smoking a cigarette, a cigar or pipe releases over 4000 chemicals. Contained in the smoke that is released is tar. Tar is what remains of the smoke particles once the Nicotine and water have been removed and it contains many carcinogens that are known to cause cancer. This tar and other toxic compounds like carbon monoxide damage your health by causing cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Some of the chemicals contained in cigarettes include: Acetic Acid, acetone, ammonia, arsenic, butane, cadmium, DDT/deildrin, ethanol, Formaldehyde, hexamine, hydrogen cyanide, methane, methanol, naphthalene, Nicotine, nitrobenzene, nitrous oxide phenois, stearic acid, toluene and vinyl chloride. You may have heard of some of these chemicals before because they have other uses and this tends to make them sound even less appetizing than if you are just hearing of them for the first time. Cigarettes also contain the following metals: aluminium, Copper, gold, lead, Magnesium, mercury, Silicon, silver, titanium and Zinc. The list of known cancer-causing agents in cigarettes includes: benzo(a)pyrene, B-napthylamine, cadmium, crysenes, dibenz acidine, nickel, P.A.H.S., polonium 210, toudine, urethane, nitrosamines and N. nitrosomes. Each time a smoker inhales they are taking the chemicals mentioned above into their lungs, along with harmful gasses like carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide.

and it depends on how long you smoke

Yes, it is. I smoked for 43 years thinking , "That won't ever happen to me...!" Well, it does and it did. I have lung disease. It doesn't always show up in the young people but if they keep smoking the chances are 99.9999% that it will get them later. I coughed so bad while smoking that I couldn't eat right, sleep right, or work right. I quit smoking in June of 2007 and I am now sleeping like a baby, going to pulmonary rehab to try and build up my weakened , scarred lungs so that I can enjoy what life I have left. I am 59. My Mother died of Emphysema at 65. STOP NOW...

Even if the kids at your school are smoking and their physical performance is fine, doesn't mean it will be that way forever. Smoking habits are something that builds up over time, and drug companies know this. Smoking is like a slow painful death that you don't want, but you like it. Yes, smoking severely slows down you reflexes, memory, immune system, and most every brain function. So, if it answers your question, If someone were to begin smoking now, as a Freshman in high school. You would notice it in a couple months. They would notice in a couple years.

Well, from someone who watched his Dad die of lung cancer last year, drowning in his own blood, and literally coughing up pieces of his lungs, I can tell you that yes, it is very, very bad for you. And noone can say exactly how long it takes for negative effects to present. Take it from me - smoking hurts your lungs, can diminish sperm count, and makes a person smell awful. And I am not some anti-smoking thumper. I smoked cigarettes for almost 20 years. If you haven't started yet, don't. Quitting cigarettes is EXTREMELY difficult. Do yourself a favor, and - to quote an old 80's slogan - "Just say no."

my grandpa died of lung cancer at the age of 74 for his many years of smoking. 74 is pretty old right, but we have a young gene, everyone's still alive over 90 except him. and my dad's been smoking for bout 20 years, now he is on medication. the bad effects of smoking dont show until after many years but the main thing is it costs a lot and it affects more to people around you, second hand smoking is worst. think about your family and your children in the future. my parents got divorced just because of financial and health problems around my dad's smoking.

It varies from person to person. But there will be effects for anyone who does it. A friend of mine who smokes now has yellow teeth, a deeper voice, and generally looks crappier than she did five years ago when she started. My dad smoked for about 30 years. He got asthma after about 8 years of it. Still didn't quit, and got throat cancer several years later. Beat that, but then it came back and spread to his lungs. Before he died he was 6'4" and 94 pounds. He couldn't walk. He couldn't breathe. He couldn't speak above a whisper. He was in constant pain. He went into a coma three days before he died, and my 9 year old brother found him. So you tell me - is smoking that bad?

Yes, smoking really is that bad.

It's not necessarily going to kill everyone, some people smoke for years and never get cancer, but it DOES increase their risk of getting cancer, emphysema and other ailments.

I'm going to assume that you're pretty young since you're mentioning school. These people more than likely have only been smoking for a year, or maybe even a few years. It takes quite a while for the (major) problems with smoking to really show.

Google "effects of smoking" to find out what it does to you, and there is a list out there somewhere that dictates how much your health improves after you've quit (like after 24 hours you can taste better, etc)

Wait, do you mean cigarettes? Dude, cigarettes cause cancer. People in your age group probably aren't seeing the results yet. Talk to older people who smoke. It damages you in the long run and really it's gross and not worth it anyways...

It's not all that bad when you're young. Your lungs are strong and clean and can put up with all that pollution. The problem is smoking is addictive. In fact the tobacco companies have figured out how to manipulate the Nicotine in cigarettes to make it even more addictive. Pretty soon your hooked on a pack at day habit at $3 a day. (Do the math.) And then it creeps up to 2 packs a day. I know very smart people who knew smoking was bad for their health. But they did it anyway to be social. They thought they were too smart to get addicted. But they were wrong. Now they find themselves having a Nicotine fit in the middle of an important business meeting and they can't sneak out of the building for a fix. Now they want to quit but it's very hard. I know people who quit for a whole year, but then relapsed. Of course if you can put up with the habit, some people don't care if they're addicted. And the truth is it takes about 30 years of smoking before lung cancer or emphysema develops. Of course this is exactly what people think (if they think at all) when they start.

When I was a teen I thought the same thing, now 20 years later, Im coughing my butt off, and it hurts to breath sometimes. I wake up in the middle of the night gasping for air, and thats freaky. I cant go in the cold weather cause it makes my lungs close and I cant breath, so I dont go out winter. :(
Smoking sucks. Ive tried to quit, but its a bad habit to break!

I have lost three family members to smoking so yes it is that bad the effects are not imeadiate and usualy dont show up till years later this is why your friend seem fine check them out ten years from now the first thing you will notice is their skin complexion and rappid aging look. not to mention all the obvious like yellow teeth nicoteen stained fingers most smokers go through two pacs a day at $4.00 per pac that is $320.00 per mo You could drive a nice car for that money.

Of Course! it might be awhile until you feel the effects, but there still there. Every cigarette takes about 12 minutes out of your life. Now, that might not seem like alot but it all adds up.To sum it up, you should never, ever, ever smoke, no matter what!
