I prefer the herb Valerian. It's cheap, natural, non-chemical and has been used for 100's of years. Get it at most drug stores

Well, any OTC sleep medicine could carry a big risk of addiction, so you want to be careful about those. It's also important to note that you shouldn't take a medicine for symptoms you don't have... your body can get used to that to the point where it won't work when you have those symptoms. For example, you shouldn't take Tylenol PM unless you have pain and you shouldn't take Benedryl unless your allergies are also bothering you.

If you'd like, there are popular and effective natural sleep aids that don't have a risk of addiction. There's Melatonin, Valerian, Chamomile, Hops, L-Tryptophan, L-Theanine, Passionflower, and Scullcap (an herb).
You can try any one of those to help you sleep naturally.

5-HTP is supposed to be one of the best and you can find others in a web search for "natural sleep remedies".

Simply Sleep is awesome...its the same sleep ingredient thats in Tylenol PM...only without the Tylenol part. I use it a lot, but dont take 2 unless you have nothing to do the next day b/c it will be pretty potent. One works fine for me, or sometimes even a half if I need to be up within about 5-6 hrs of taking it.

Just dont take it all the time cause your body may form an addiction to it (and other non-natural sleep aids too).

Just the store brands of Tylenol PM seem to work fine for me. I think it is probably safer than a regular sleep Aid.

Sometimes tea is good for this.. Sleepy Time Extra with Velarian Root is good, pretty cheap and very healthy. If OTC meds aren't strong enough, use with the tea may help achieve desired affects.

Avoid OTC Melatonin capsules.. Melatonin is a hormone your body produces, and if you take the capsules your body will stop producing it on your own, and develop a tolerance to the capsules, making it harder for you to sleep.

Melatonin (3 mg) is non-habit forming tablet which is the version of the chemical your brain naturally produces at night for sleeping, and you will NOT be groggy when you wake up. It's cheap and sold at Walmart or your local Vitamin Shoppe or GNC.

valerian Root or Kava Kava are also good, but these should not be taken if you have high blood pressure.

Aromatherapy is surprisingly helpful, such as Lavender oil on your pillowcase or real Lavender in a sache near your pillow or bed. Settling down before bed with a hot, aromatic tea like Celestial Seasonings "Sleepytime" tea has been helpful for me (also found at Walmart)---this contains the well known "sleepy" spices/herbs: Chamomile, spearmint, lemon grass, tilia flowers, Blackberry leaves, orange blossoms, Hawthorn berries and rosebuds.

Most of the otc sleeping pills are just Benadryl in different packaging. Compare the active ingredients, it's the same thing. It's worked for me, but anti-histamines also make me depressed so I try not to take them unless I have to.

I've been taking Melatonin and it's worked extremely well for me. I got mine from Walgreens, but I'm sure most drugstores that carry supplements will have it.

I like Chamomile, but it's not that effective for me. Just relaxing. Can't comment on Valerian, have never tried it.

If you live in America, go to Wal Mart and get there store brand sleep Aid. It'll cost you about $2, and it works very well. Melatonin would also be good as a sleep Aid as well as helping your immune system.
