Me too! However, there are things you can do that are known to work. It will depend some what on the reason you cannot sleep and your physical, emotional, and mental makeup.
First, if it is physical, you may need to be exercising more during the daytime. However, do not exercise at night it will make you less tired.
Do not drink caffeen at night, that means no coffee or pop unless it is decaff or has no caffee in it. That includes no chocalate.
Watching a scary or physical movie will get your stirred up and will make it difficult to sleep. So, try to listen to soft music or easy sound effects to help you relax.
If you have worry or are upset about something (may be sub-consicenous) you need to get your mind on something pleasant or read or accept the fact that nothing can be done about it now anyhow, that you will deal with it the next day.
A short walk before it gets dark will help you unwind and relax you.
If your of age drink a little wine, if not drink some juice or other non-caffenee drink.
Counting imaginary sheep actually helps, but not if you think on it too hard!
Don't eat a large meal at supper time.
A herb called Valerian Root will help you sleep and is non-habit forming.
Take a warm shower just before bedtime.
Keep clearing you mind as much as possible and keep trying to think of empty space --- really! It does work!
If all things fail, you may be sleeping to late or going to bed to early. Some people's bodies (like mine) need very little sleep at night and only need an occasional nap or a night with extra sleep once in a while. Scienctist say this is not possible, but they are usually wrong about everything else! It works for me!

Be sure that you try the basics first: no caffine after 3pm, eat your big meal of the day at lunch and a lighter dinner that finished by 7, if you exercise at night, make sure you're done with it by 8, if you don't try at least some light stretching to ease the stress out of your muscles. Darken the house at nine, no very bright lights. And finish your night with a long warm shower or some light reading or write in a journal, no tv for at least a half hour before you turn in.
If the basics arn't working for you, and you'd like a non-prescription, non-habit-forming alternative medicine:
Valarian Root and Kava Kava are good suggestions, and both work quite well. (Aviod the Kava Kava if you or immediate family members have a history of liver problems.)
But I recommend starting with something milder. I recommend St John's Wort. Start by taking one or two capsules about an hour before bed. Expirament - everything affect everyone a little differently.
St John's Wort has a mild effect. It will relax you and ease your mind. If you take it during the day it allows you to deal with problms with a level head. At night it keeps things in perspective, and lets you allow yourself to relax. So when you're worried and laying in bed telling yourself "There's no need to think about this right now. There's nothing I can do about it at 11 pm. I need to get a good night's sleep so I can handle things in the morning", you'll actually listen to yourself, and be able to put it aside and go to sleep.
If you find you need something stronger to let you relax into sleep, try Valerian Root, 1-2 capsules at night an hour before bed, depending on how wound up you are.
Both Valarian Root and St John's Wort are common and reasonably priced. You can find both at most grocery/drug stores and in places like Kmart and Target. Kava Kava is great, but it's hard to find now, you'd need to find it at a privately-owned health-food store. And unless you're experienced with self-medicating with loose teas, the capsules are much more convienient.
Oh- and I don't recommend those "sleep-formula" pills they put out. Once you know what you can take and what it will do, the pure single supplements work better than the mixed formulas with a lot of fillers.
