Lisamisc's suggestions are good. Here's a fast way to get a significant number of pounds off, in the beginning.
1. Get and read a copy of the book, The Power of Positive Thinking by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale. Apply its ideas to your situation. If you don;t have time to read the whole thing, read the first chapter.
2. Using Peale's ideas, cut your food intake in half. For now, on't worry about what you're eating. Just eat half as much as you have been.
3. Walk as fast as you can for as many hours a day and week as you can. On work days, try to walk for one full hour every day. On your days off, spend the entire afternoon walking.
Stretch first, especially your hamstrings. Do that simply by reaching up to the sky and gently stretching your hands to your knees.
4. This is almost guaranteed to take ten pound or more off you in two weeks or less.

Cutting out carbohydrates and sugar for fourteen days straight a.k.a. Atkins or South Beach. They will make you add 'good' carbs gradually. Get the book and read from cover to cover. The great part is you eat whenever you are hungry--unlimited protein and fat. Bad news: You have to check with doctor first to get a clean bill of health.
The easiest 10 pounds I have ever lost in a two week period. After that I was losing two to three pounds a week. By The fourth month I had to buy a new wardrobe as my pants were falling off me

It all basically comes down to calories. There are a few "tricks" however. If you get plenty of protein, your brain should get a signal to stop eating as much. Eat in the morning & lunch, but limit your evening meals' carbohydrates -- you'll want some protein, but not too many other carb.'s during the evening.
Stay off the white starches: sugar, refined flours/white breads, limit potatoes or use them in the morning. Use high-quality fats/oils, and keep that lower in the evenings, too. FIBER helps. It helps you feel full and doesn't pack on the pounds. Low-calorie veggies are great, too, especially if they are nutritious: asperagus, broccoli, Cabbage, carrots, greens, peas, tomatoes, etc. Bananas seem to pack on pounds for me, while apples seem not to, in my own opinion. Yellow squash, lettuce, etc. add little food value. Orange squash can be okay, but beware of hidden calories like butter/margerine & sugar-glazes. If you are feeling like you'll crash your diet, try some red or purple grapes, etc. --- something a little sweet but not as high in calories (& still healthy). Also, do give yourself a free day or free "cheat"-meal about once a week. You may add s-o-m-e weight, but you will only absorb "so much" off of that one meal : the result will be less than if you are so strict on yourself that you cheat on your diet all week long.
Watch out for hidden calories in drinks : they can quickly add up, and what's not burned off is turned to fat. On the other hand, if you work out in the morning, you'll want some quick calories during & right after your workout to get the most from it! When you build up your level of muscle, you not only use calories THEN, but also immediately after and even further as your body rebuilds. In addition, extra muscle requires extra caloric-expenditures simply for your body to keep up with maintenance of it; so, this translates into increased 24-hr. calorie-burning. After awhile, that will mean you may not have to watch the calories so much, because your body will eagerly burn up lots more calories.
Maybe try clipping some pics of what you want to look like, to help motivate you --- some goals. Also, try reading up on the pro's & con's of your dietary habits : knowledge can be helpful in turning away from bad eating habits, especially when coupled with thoughts like "How long do I want to be around for my family?"

PS --- If you're innovative, someone PLEASE invent a sugar-free, fat-free, low-calorie chocolate !!! ( --- Chocolate itself is really good for you, you know!)

Eat healthier food and not processed or fast foods. Eat slow, no big meals but a bunch of small meals. Drink alot of water, avoid sugary drinks. Eat balanced meal of protein and only complex (good) carbohydrates. Eat breakfast and not late at night. Always drink a full glass of water before meals and walk for 5+ minutes immediately after eating.
Walk alot, do exercises as much as you can, and fidgit around when sitting. Check your medication if you take some because a lot of them cause weight gain.
These are tips that are mention in most diet books and by nutritionist and doctors specialized in weight lost and maintenance. It workk for me.
