It's not a big deal, especially in this day and age. Don't be such a baby.
That is, of course, if you have a dentist that you trust thoroughly.

well i hate to hear that you have to get a cavity filled. ive had plenty filled before and i wish there was something to help it. i just tell myself that if you dont go on with a little bit of drilling, you are going to lose the tooth. You dont want to be toothless do you? besides..fillings are not the bad part...root canals are!!!

I know, it's a horrible thought.
But if you actually think about it, is there anything bad about it? Try to imagine sitting there in the dentist's chair. You're all numby, you can't even feel your mouth. There's that whiney sound of the drill. Scared? Why? It's just an annoying noise and a funny-feeling jaw.
If you actually try to imagine the situation, there's nothing to worry about. It doesn't even hurt and its over in less than half an hour. The worst think you need to worry about is the fact you can't eat for a few hours.
Brood on that for a bit, hopefully it will put things into perspective and you'll realise that thats a far worse prospect.
Oh, and its not a big deal.

I hate getting fillings too. Maybe you could ask your dentist if you could listen to your i-pod or cd player while you get your filling.

Since this is the alternative medicine category, I'll suggest a cup of Chamomile tea before you go to the dentist. If you're worrying now -- it's only Monday -- have one now, too. Buy a big box of Chamomile teabags, my friend, and use them. It's a non-addictive aid to calming down. Add a little sweetener to it if needs be. Or, just be tough and drink it whether it tastes good or not, since it is "medicine."

Hey Katie, I am in the boat with you, except for the fact that this Tuesday I am going to have a tooth pulled. I am so scared of a dentist myself. The dentist already knows this, as I have told him. I am going to remind him again when I go in. That is in the morning to, at 11am. They are going to give me gas as well. The reason that I am scared of a dentist is because I have had some very bad experiences with them. Oh and guess what, I am 50. I am looking at my trip to the dentist Tuesday this way, I am hurting like heck right now, but when I leave his office (I will be numb at first) I should be pain free once my gum heals up. You can't be any more scared than I am right now. So I guess we can be scared together for now, lol. Good luck with your trip on Friday. I will be thinking about you.

I feel that you will get local anesthesia for cavity fill-up. But you have to resist certain pressure especially the sensitiveness when the process is going on. If you are very sensitive for the process then discuss with the doctor before your treatment starts.

Don't worry darling!
Think about this. I was six and I had EIGHT cavities.
They extracted, (pulled out) three of them.
I cried for hours. (then again, I was six!)
Now, they don't hurt like that, just think about something really happy, or a story to go along with what they're doing.
Think about you're life-long story, that one works really well.
I get sick to my stomach because of the gas mask thing they put on you. Just try to breath through both your mouth and nose, and don't take huge breaths. I know exactly how you feel, and I hate them too.
Luckily I've been cavity free for over a year now :)
I wish you the best of luck!

You need something to take your mind off of the procedure. Maybe listening to a relaxing CD while you are having it done, noise cancelling earphones may also help, do not eat before the procedure, breath thru your nose and try to relax. Let the dentist know how nervous you are. They can also give you Nitrous Oxide to help you relax.

Don't worry too much. Having a cavity filled isn't that big of a deal. I had to have a cavity filled last year. I'll let you know that before that day i was soo worried, i got sick to my stomach and got really anxious. However it wasn't bad at all. I went and they sat me in the chair. I told the dentist assistant that i was kinda nervous and so she told me it was all ok and that she would be there for me. They put the numbing gel on my gums and then when i couldn't feel anything they put the shot in to totally numb it up. I will admit that the drill sounded scary but it wasn't too bad. And it was over faster than i thought it would be.
My advice to you would be to not worry about it too much. Many people get cavities filled every day. A short time of discomfort is better than having your tooth rot away and the pain of that. If you still feel nervous about the procedure you can talk to your dentist about having them gas you before they work on you. This way you will be totally knocked out and won't be able to see or hear what they are doing. This alternative may cost a little more but it could be better for you because then you won't have to worry. I hope that this helps you
