Unisom works great for me, it is otc and strong enough to knock out a horse, it does seem to hang around with you the next day though, and you can build a tolerance quite fast (within days) good luck!

Valeria is an herb and it works well. it just relaxes you enough to fall asleep and is available at a health food store.
Ambien works great, too, but can leave you feeling groggy the next day.
Tylenol PM and the like work if you are just stressed out one particular night, but shouldn't be used much more.
Of course, all of these should be discussed with your doctor cause sleep issues can be easily treated with diet/exercise (as you mentioned) and some more chronic problems might need further investigation.
Insomnia sucks!

Sleep aides are tricky. I don't know whether your doctor is trying to prescribe you LUNESTA or Ambien or some drug of a similar nature, but out of personal experience with the latter; I found it very dangerous if I could not fall asleep. Your life becomes an almost lucid dream that isn't real until the next morning. It's a very bizarre experience if you end up staying awake, so use with moderation and caution.

When I can't sleep (which is often) I use Melatonin 3 mg. It is all natural and you won't become chemically addicted, If you don't get 8 hours of sleep, you don't feel tired and "HUNGOVER" like you can with other medicines. I love it. Try it, what can it hurt.

When I was having a bout of post-menopausal insomnia, I just tried OTC Tylenol PM. It worked great for me.
Hopefully, your doctor is looking into why you are having difficulty sleeping.

My approach to this subject is based more on the use of the mind, rather than reliance on some product. You have a very powerful tool at your disposal and can learn how to control it and have it do many things you don't normally consider. Sleep being one of them.

I've used an all natural product called Alluna. You can get it at Walgreens. Because it's natural it takes a couple of days to work, but it really does. A friend who had used it recommended it to me. After a week I didn't need it anymore.

I like Valium the best but doctor's do not prescribe it as much.
Ambien is a little strong for me.
Excedrin PM is good but you are still a little sleepy the next day if you take too many.

I am shocked that here in an alternative medicine forum, that of the preceeding 27 answers, the vast majority were prescription medicines. Are you here just to gawk? Have we surrendered to the doctor/drug company cartel ? Do most of you seek alt methods or don't you.? Anyway my editorial is over. I have found that Melatonin 1 to 3 mg works well with no side effects

One of the best sleep aids is the use of Biofeedback therapy. No drugs, just good old fashioned relaxation. I've had absolutely no positive results from sleep drugs.

i've taken sleep aides for years prescribed by my dr.........i take "trazadone" to get to sleep and produce REM sleep....along with that "Seroquel".........he added that to stay asleep....1 each before bed..100mg....i sleep better than i have my whole life and lots of dreams!...trazadone works well on it's own and it's inexpensive" for the REM dreaming state."...but the Seroquel is pricey if you don't have insurance....sweet dreams..

I've found that the best sleep Aid product are the over-the-counter generic ones. If the normal dosage doesn't work for you, I've doubled them before and then backed off after a few days. Walmart has a brand that are just called sleep Aid, they are blue, liquid filled caplets, and I believe the dosage is two. The best tip I was ever given is to take them about 30 minutes before you are ready to actually get in the bed. Then read (not watch tv) until you feel your eyes get heavy, then force yourself to turn off the light. Because you can stay awake through them -- they won't just knock you out. The other thing that I've done, which is a big no-no, but works if you just have had it and MUST get a night of sleep, try Nyquil, that'll knock you out cold. All the best to you, I know how much it stinks to not be able to sleep.

Sonata Rocks!
I have been fighting taking sleep aides for a long time. didn't want to get addicted like dad - was the main reason!
Anyway, after much debate, i finally gave in. Sonata works quickly with no hangover. After i got in the rhythm of sleeping at the same time each night, I didn't even need it anymore!
They say Sonata is out of your system in FOUR hours! That is awesome!

I've always had problems sleeping in the past. I found that Tylenol p.m. worked very well for me. It can be addicting just becuase it makes you feel relaxed. Once you use it for awhile you don't feel that you can fall asleep without that relaxed feeling. My advice is not to take it for long periods of time.

lunesta works WONDERS for me.. but i have to know i'm going to bed before i take it. if i take it and don't lie down, it does no good... but if i take it and then go to bed, i'm asleep in less than 10 minutes. i try not to take it all the time though.
if i'm having pain in my knee (which i frequently do), i revert to good 'ol Tylenol PM. it has enough sleep aide and pain Reliever in it to do it for me sometimes.
Ambien didn't even phase me.
OH, and walmart brand (equate) sleep Aid gels work pretty well too. nowhere near as well as LUNESTA, but they're cheaper.. much cheaper.

Another thing I've found that works REAL well is to have a heart-to-heart with God... That's the BEST sleep Aid I've found...!

I have suffered from chronic insomnia my whole life. I think that is part of the reason I learned to read at a very early age. I had to do something, lol.
I've never tried prescription sleep aides. I tried Valerian, but all that did was make me burp and I didn't care for the taste. A friend recommended Melatonin. That works for me as long as I take at least 3mgs. It's a substance found, in one degree or another, in all living creatures. In higher animals, such as man, it is produced by the pineal gland, Light, at any level, inhibits it's production. and so interferes with your biological clock. Your typical office lighting plays hell with it. It's known as the "hormone of darkness".
I take my supplement, it gives me the Melatonin I need to reset my circadian rhythm. I sleep at least six hours and if I wake up, I am able to get back to sleep. I'm never groggy the next morning.

I'm glad both you and your doctor are working on this together. I've battled insomnia for years and have tried a number of prescription and non-prescription aids. Results vary for individuals but in my experience, Valerian is the most helpful of the non-prescription aids. It is available in any drugstore and is not habit forming. It's better to use it on a more regular basis than the prescription meds. However, sometimes I need something stronger so Valium or Stilnox has helped me BUT, I don't take these longer than 2 days within a month's time as I don't want to be dependent on them.
I have not had much success with Melatonin at all. I actually felt nauseated after taking this.
Brisk walking several times a week also helped me cut down on the meds.
Good luck!

Find somebody that does aromatherapy and have them mix a personal blend for you. Second best is herbal supplements. Go to www.trinityschool.org and find a naturopath in your area. If you can bring your body back into balance with herbal supplements, sleep should come naturally. If not, there are herbal combinations with Valerian that may help.
