RELAX!
Seriously, start with your forehead (most important, that's why you start here) and move downward.

actually carbs will help to enduce sleep. Carbs get a bad rap but actually have benefits if not overdone. A baked potato before bedtime will enduce sleep.

Kava is relaxing but I like Valerian for sleep. It smells like dirty socks, but it works and has been used in Europe forever. The Sleepytime tea mentioned before is good. Scullcap is also a good herb. I sometimes use a Solaray product called "Sleep blend sp-17" which I got at my grocery store. Works well. Stay away from caffeine later in the day, especially power drinks, exercise earlier in the day, eat a light meal for early dinner without a lot of protein in it, remove TV's from your room, turn off computer early on, do some reading around bedtime, reduce stress, keep your bed and bedroom a sanctuary for rest.

I would suggest Melatonin but that never worked for me, what really worked for me is Magnesium, I try very little amounts in powder form, it works wonders. Also, try medications by you really need to know the proper techniques. By the way, I'm only up because I'm waiting for David Letterman show:) So you're my last person from answers! Good night and sleep tight!

I am glad you avoid taking meds. There are lots of things you can do; studies are pretty clear about our bio clocks need darkness for Melatonin to be released to cue sleep. So no artificial light. Nothing that's going to elevate your blood sugar before bed, like juice or carbs like a bagel. Finally, I really recommend self hypnosis. I make tapes for my clients and almost 100% report having the best nights sleep when they fall asleep to it with headphones. I know when I'm restless that's what i do. You could always read an university accounting text, but that might put you in a coma.
