What is the procedure for getting tested for allergies?
Does the doctor take a blood sample, skin tissue, etc...? How long does it take to determine what the person is allergic to? does it take several doctor visits to find out? I would appreciate some insight from someone who has been tested for allergies. Thank you.

Also, is it painful?

PRICKLING SUSPECTED COMPONENTS INTO SKIN AT A SENSITIVE SPOT, NOT UNLIKE GETTING A TATTOO. A REACTION SHOULD BE EVIDENT WITHIN MINUTES.
YOUR BODY IS RESILIENT AND MAY RESOLVE THE ALLERGY ON IT'S OWN IN TIME.

No worries here, no matter how they're testing you it won't be that painful at all.

It depends on what they're testing you for. If it's environmental, they might order a blood test. Thats incredibly simple, they take some blood in one sitting and within two to three days you have results.

They might have you do a pinprick test. Each teeeny tiny needle has something you could be allergic to on it. They'll take a history to find out what they should be testing you for, prick you with a number of allergens, give you about 5 minutes, and check. If you're allergic to something, you'll be red and itchy in that area. These barely hurt. They're honestly tiny pricks.

If they do a patch test, you'll be getting two rectangular stickers on your back (usually on your upper back). If you've ever had stickers and peeled off the outside lining instead of the sticker, that's pretty much what it looks like. The rectangle is divided into smaller rectangles, and each one has an allergen. They'll tape the rectangles to you, and ask you not to shower for a day or two. After the day (or two, depending on your doctor) you come back to have the tape removed and your back checked for a reaction (same deal, it'll be red and itchy, etc). Your doctor MAY ask you to wait another day, but normally it's not necessary.

With any of these tests, you should not take antihistamines or any allergy Medication for at least four days before.

Good luck!

Don't get yourself stressed over allergy tests. You don't even have to study for these. At the time the test is scheduled, the doctor's office should tell you exactly when they want you to stop taking any allergy meds. If you are on other meds for copd, asthma, or emphysema be sure to ask which of these meds they want you to continue taking. You should also be told what type of test to expect. Also, because many people with allergies and respiratory problems are sensitive to fragrance and odors, the doctor's office might tell you they have a no fragrance policy, and let you know not to wear perfume or cologne on the day of the test. If your allergies case severe skin problems such as eczema, then they will probably opt to do a RAST test. This test is the fastest to perform but the slowest to get results. They will draw one vial of blood (or more if they are doing other tests while they are at it) from your arm. This will hurt no more or less than it usually does when you have to bleed on command. If your skin is in good condition, then they will do a skin test. This test takes longer to perform, but you get your results right away. Depending on the number of allergens they are testing, they will either perform this test on your arm or your back. They will give you what will feel like a little pinprick. What they are doing is placing a small amount of a known allergen under your skin and watching for a reaction. This will not hurt more than the little pin prick. So, just relax. It will make it easier on you and the person performing the test. The number of allergens they are testing will determine how long it takes. If you do the RAST test, they will send you home with instructions on when to call back for results. If they do the skin test, you will leave that day with your results. Based on the results, you should also be counseled on how to avoid the allergens that were identified. This counseling can take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes, depending on the number of questions you ask and the number of things to which you are allergic. Be sure you understand what they are telling you. If they confuse you or seem to speak gibberish, then ask them to stop and explain. The important thing is not to stress yourself over this process, because the information you will get will be vital to controlling your allergies so you can feel better as soon as possible. Good Luck

usual procedure is no allergy meds for 24-48 hours prior to the testing time.

Then you go in and on your back they draw a very large checkerboard. Into each box they put a drop of a single allergen and then use a small wire instrument to scratch the skin or each one, *different scratcher for each spot, no cross contamination* then you wait up to 1 hour. The things you are allregic to will turn bright red and most likely itch quite a bit. The other spots that dont show anything you arent allregic too most likely. This is how it was done to me just a few years back when I was tested again to see if there were changes, styles might be different, medicine is always changing.

There are 2 different ways to do allergy tests.

You must be OFF antihistamines for 6 days beforehand. You may continue to take asthma medications.

1. RAST - this is a blood test where they introduce various serums to your blood. This is done to people who have very sensitive skin and tend to react to everything. You can also get your overall IGE score which is helpful in some instances.

2. SPT - skin prick test. This is where they prick your skin - usually the inside of your arm with allergens, and wait 15 minutes to see if anything happens.

Your first Dr. visit will be about 3 hours long as they take a comprehensive history of your health and conduct the tests.

An SPT result will be immediate whereas a RAST will take 2 weeks for the results.

If you have environmental allergies you will know excactly what you're allergic to.

Good luck!
