Uses
Zyrtec-D is an antihistamine and decongestant combination which provides relief of symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergies such as watery eyes, runny nose (rhinitis), itching eyes, sneezing, and stuffy nose (nasal congestion). Zyrtec-D is not recommended for use in children under 12 years of age due to the high amount of pseudoephedrine.
Storage
- Store at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
- Brief storage between 59 to 86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) is permitted.
- Do not store in the bathroom.
- Keep all medicines away from children and pets.
Overdose
- If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
- Symptoms of overdose may include: severe drowsiness, irregular or unusually fast heartbeat, seizures.

How To Use
- Take Zyrtec-D by mouth twice daily; or use as directed by your doctor.
- Zyrtec-D may be taken with or without food.
- Swallow the tablet whole.
- Do not break, crush, or chew the tablet; doing so will destroy the long action and increase the chance of side effects.
- Do not increase your dose or take this more often than directed.
- Do not take Zyrtec-D for several days before allergy testing since test results can be affected.
Side Effects
- Drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth, dizziness, nervousness, nausea, headache, or trouble sleeping may occur.
- If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
- Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: fast/irregular heartbeat, uncontrolled shaking or tremor.
- Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: yellowing eyes and skin, dark urine, persistent fatigue, mental/mood changes, seizures, trouble breathing, trouble urinating.
- An allergic reaction to Zyrtec-D is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs.
- Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
- If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions
- Zyrtec-D should not be used if you have certain medical conditions.
- Before using Zyrtec-D, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: an allergy to Zyrtec-D hydroxyzine, glaucoma (narrow angle type), severe difficulty urinating (urinary retention), severe high blood pressure, severe heart/blood vessel disease (coronary artery disease), experienced serious side effects with decongestants (e.g., irregular heart rhythm).
- Before using Zyrtec-D, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: kidney disease, problems urinating (e.g., enlarged prostate), liver disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, thyroid problems (hyperthyroidism), glaucoma (open angle type), any allergies.
- Zyrtec-D may make you dizzy or drowsy; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery.
- Limit alcoholic beverages.
- Caution is advised when using Zyrtec-D in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to the effects of Zyrtec-D.
- Zyrtec-D should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy.
- Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
- Zyrtec-D passes into breast milk.
- Breast-feeding is not recommended while using Zyrtec-D.
Missed Dose
- If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember.
- If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
- Do not double the dose to catch up.
Drug Interactions
- Zyrtec-D should not be used with or within 14 days of taking MAO inhibitors (e.g., furazolidone, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine procarbazine, selegiline, isocarboxazid, tranylcypromine).
- Before using Zyrtec-D, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription products you may use, especially of: certain blood pressure drugs (e.g., methyldopa, guanethidine, reserpine, beta-blockers such as propranolol), adrenalin-like drugs (e.g., ephedrine, methylphenidate), certain herbal products (e.g., ephedra).
- Before using Zyrtec-D, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription products you may use, especially of drugs that cause drowsiness such as: medicine for sleep (e.g., sedatives), tranquilizers, anti-anxiety drugs (e.g., diazepam), narcotic pain relievers (e.g., codeine), psychiatric medicines (e.g., phenothiazines such as chlorpromazine, or tricyclics such as amitriptyline), anti-seizure drugs (e.g., carbamazepine), muscle relaxants, other antihistamines that cause drowsiness (e.g., diphenhydramine).
- Check the labels on all your medicines (e.g., cough-and-cold products, diet aids) because they may contain ingredients that could cause drowsiness or increase your heart rate or blood pressure.
- Ask your pharmacist about the safe use of those products.
- Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
