Uses
Reteplase is used to improve blood flow to the heart after a heart attack.


Storage
  • Store sealed kit at either refrigerated or room temperature between 36 and 77 degrees F (2 to 25 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
  • Do not freeze.
  • After mixing in correct IV fluids (consult your pharmacist for details), Retavase can be stored at refrigerated or room temperature for up to 4 hours.


Overdose
  • If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
  • Symptoms of overdose may include severe bleeding or bruising.

How To Use
  • Follow all instructions for proper mixing and dilution with the correct IV fluids.
  • If you have any questions regarding the use of Retavase, consult your pharmacist.
  • Do not shake Retavase; doing so may cause Retavase to become ineffective.
  • Reteplase is given by injection into a vein (IV), as directed by your doctor.
  • Generally, it is given as an initial dose followed by a second dose 30 minutes later.
  • Before using, check this product visually for particles or discoloration.
  • If either is present, do not use the liquid.
  • Learn how to store and discard needles and medical supplies safely.
  • Consult your pharmacist.

Side Effects
  • Nausea or dizziness may occur.
  • If either of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: bleeding (e.g., from injection site, gums, or wounds), unusual fatigue or weakness, irregular heartbeat, blood in your urine or stool.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: changes in amount of urine, discoloration of the skin, severe stomach pain, muscle pain, chest pain, slurred speech, mental/mood changes, severe headache, eye pain or vision changes.
  • An allergic reaction to Retavase is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs.
  • Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing.
  • If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions
  • Retavase is not recommended for use if you have the following medical conditions: active internal bleeding (e.g., ulcer, trauma), history of stroke, recent surgery of the brain or spine, blood vessel problems (e.g., aneurysms), severe high blood pressure (uncontrolled).
  • Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: bleeding or blood problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, blood clots (e.g., thrombophlebitis), recent surgery or injury, heart problems/infections (e.g., arrhythmias, endocarditis, mitral valve stenosis), eye problems, kidney or liver disease.
  • Retavase may cause you to bleed easily.
  • Use caution with sharp objects like safety razors or nail cutters and avoid activities which that may increase your chance of getting cut, bruised, or injured.
  • Also, avoid unnecessary injections into the muscles (IM).
  • Caution is advised when using Retavase in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to the effects of Retavase.
  • Retavase should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy.
  • Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
  • It is not known if Retavase passes into breast milk.
  • Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Missed Dose
  • If you miss a dose or your dose is interrupted, contact your doctor immediately to establish a new dosing schedule.

Drug Interactions
  • Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially: aspirin, abciximab, antiplatelet drugs (e.g., clopidogrel, dipyridamole, ticlopidine), blood thinners (e.g., warfarin or heparins), NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen).
  • This product can affect the results of certain lab tests.
  • Make sure laboratory personnel and your doctors know you use Retavase.
  • Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
