Storage
- Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
- Do not store in the bathroom.
- Keep all medicines away from children and pets.
Overdose
- If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
- Symptoms of overdose may include: vomiting, severe stomach upset.
How To Use
- Take Proferrin-Forte by mouth usually once or twice daily with or without meals; or as directed by your doctor.
- Take Proferrin-Forte with a full glass (8 oz or 240 ml) of water, unless your doctor directs you otherwise.
- Do not lie down for 30 minutes after taking Proferrin-Forte.
- The dosage depends on your medical condition and response to therapy.
Side Effects
- An allergic reaction to Proferrin-Forte is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs.
- Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing.
- If you notice any unusual effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions
- Before using Proferrin-Forte, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: iron metabolism disorders (hemochromatosis), other types of anemia (e.g., pernicious anemia), any allergies (especially to meat products).
- This product is made from the red blood cells of steers (bovine).
- If you prefer not to use products made from animal sources, consult your doctor regarding other iron-containing products.
- Proferrin-Forte is safe to use during pregnancy when taken as directed by your doctor.
- It is not known whether the iron component of Proferrin-Forte passes into breast milk.
- Folic acid passes into breast milk.
- Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Missed Dose
- If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember.
- If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
- Do not double the dose to catch up.
Drug Interactions
- Before using Proferrin-Forte, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription products you may use, especially of: other iron-containing products (e.g., multivitamins), phenytoin.
- This product can affect the results of certain lab tests (e.g., testing for blood in stools).
- Make sure laboratory personnel and your doctors know you use Proferrin-Forte.
- Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
