Heme Iron Polypeptide - Oral


Heme iron polypeptide is a form of iron supplement. It is used to treat or prevent iron deficiency anemia (low red blood cell count). Certain medical conditions may increase the risk of iron deficiency (e.g., pregnancy, certain surgery, chemotherapy, renal failure). It is typically used in people who cannot absorb or tolerate regular iron products (e.g., ferrous sulfate).

Uses
Heme iron polypeptide is a form of iron supplement. It is used to treat or prevent iron deficiency anemia (low red blood cell count). Certain medical conditions may increase the risk of iron deficiency (e.g., pregnancy, certain surgery, chemotherapy, renal failure). It is typically used in people who cannot absorb or tolerate regular iron products (e.g., ferrous sulfate).


Storage
  • Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) away from light and moisture.


Overdose
  • If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
  • Symptoms of overdose may include: vomiting, severe stomach upset.

How To Use
  • Take Proferrin by mouth usually once or twice daily with or without meals or as directed by your doctor.
  • Take Proferrin with a full glass (8 oz or 240 ml) of water, unless your doctor directs you otherwise.
  • Do not lie down for 30 minutes after taking Proferrin.
  • The dosage depends on your medical condition and response to therapy.

Side Effects
  • No side effects are expected to occur.
  • If side effects occur, notify your doctor promptly.

Precautions
  • Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: iron metabolism disorders (hemochromatosis), any allergies (especially to meat products).
  • This product is made from the red blood cells of steers (bovine).
  • If you prefer not to use products made from animal sources, consult your doctor regarding other iron-containing products.
  • Proferrin is safe to use during pregnancy.
  • It is not known whether Proferrin passes into breast milk.
  • Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Missed Dose
  • If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember.
  • If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
  • Do not double the dose to catch up.

Drug Interactions
  • Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially: other iron- containing products (e.g., multivitamins).
  • Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
