Uses
Midazolam Hcl is used to relax and calm patients (generally children) before certain procedures, or before anesthesia for surgery. It also helps decrease memory of the event.
Storage
- Store at room temperature 59 to 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
Overdose
- If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

How To Use
- Midazolam Hcl is given by mouth as directed.
- The patient s breathing, heart rate and blood pressure should be monitored at the time of administration, throughout the procedure and during the recovery period.
- The dosage is based on the patient s medical condition and response to the medication.
- Flumazenil is a medication that may be used to reverse the sedative effect of Midazolam Hcl.
Side Effects
- Nausea, vomiting, dizziness and drowsiness may occur.
- If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor.
- Tell your doctor immediately if you have any of these unlikely but serious side effects: unusually slow or shallow breathing, unusually slow or fast heartbeat.
- Tell your doctor immediately if you have any of these very unlikely but serious side effects: mental/mood changes, fainting, muscle tremor.
- An allergic reaction to Midazolam Hcl is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs.
- Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing.
- If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions
- Tell your doctor your medical history, including: kidney or liver disorders, heart or lung disease, glaucoma (acute narrow-angle), allergies (especially to cherries or drugs).
- Midazolam Hcl will make you dizzy or drowsy; do not engage in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery until one full day after anesthesia and surgery.
- Avoid alcoholic beverages.
- Midazolam Hcl is not recommended for use in the elderly since they may be more sensitive to the effects of Midazolam Hcl.
- Midazolam is not recommended for use during pregnancy.
- Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
- Midazolam Hcl passes into breast milk.
- Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Missed Dose
Drug Interactions
- Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially of: azole antifungals (e.g., fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole), macrolide antibiotics (e.g., clarithromycin, erythromycin), protease inhibitors (e.g., ritonavir, nelfinavir), calcium channel blockers (e.g., diltiazem, verapamil), cimetidine, carbamazepine, phenytoin, rifamycins (e.g., rifampin).
- Also report the use of drugs that can drowsiness such as: sleeping pills, sedatives, tranquilizers, anti-anxiety drugs, narcotic pain relievers (e.g., codeine), psychiatric medicines, anti-seizure drugs, muscle relaxants, drowsiness-causing anti- histamines (e.g., diphenhydramine).
- Check the labels on all your medicines (e.g., cough-and-cold products) because they may contain drowsiness-causing ingredients.
- Ask your pharmacist about the safe use of those products.
- Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice unless your doctor instructs you otherwise.
- Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
