Uses
Iodine is necessary for normal function of the thyroid gland. It is used to treat excessive thyroid function and to block thyroid activity.
Storage
- Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from heat, light and moisture.
- Do not store in the bathroom.
Overdose
- If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
- Symptoms of overdose may include stomach pain, severe diarrhea, breathing trouble, decrease in amount of urine, unconsciousness, or unusual thirst.

How To Use
- Take Lugol S by mouth as directed.
- Dilute the amount prescribed with water or fruit juice to improve the taste.
- Follow your doctor s instructions carefully.
- Do not increase the dose, take it more often or continue taking this for longer than prescribed.
Side Effects
- Stomach upset or diarrhea may occur.
- If any of these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor.
- Notify your doctor if you develop: skin rash, fever, joint pains, breathing trouble, swelling of the face, swelling of the throat, metallic taste, burning mouth, sore teeth and gums, head cold symptoms, enlarged thyroid.
- If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions
- Tell your doctor if you have: liver problems, kidney disease (for potassium-containing products), allergies (especially to iodine).
- Lugol S is not recommended for use during pregnancy.
- Consult your doctor for details.
- Lugol S passes into breast milk and has had undesirable effects on nursing infants.
- Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Missed Dose
- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered; do not take it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
- Do not double-up the dose to catch up.
Drug Interactions
- Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take, including: lithium.
- Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
