Guaifenesin is an expectorant used to help clear mucous and congestion. Decongestants (e.g., pseudoephedrine) help relieve nasal congestion. This combination medication is used to treat symptoms associated with a cold, allergies or respiratory tract illness.

Uses
Guaifenesin is an expectorant used to help clear mucous and congestion. Decongestants (e.g., pseudoephedrine) help relieve nasal congestion. This combination medication is used to treat symptoms associated with a cold, allergies or respiratory tract illness.


Storage
  • Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from heat and sunlight.
  • Do not store in the bathroom.


Overdose
  • If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
  • Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, fast or irregular heartbeat, and seizures.

How To Use
  • Take Guaimist S by mouth as directed.
  • Do not increase the dose or take it more often or longer than prescribed.
  • It is recommended to drink plenty of fluids (6-8 glasses a day) to help relieve congestion.

Side Effects
  • Nausea, stomach upset, loss of appetite, nervousness, dizziness or headache may occur the first several days as your body adjusts to the medication.
  • If these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor.
  • Notify your doctor if you develop: chest pain, a rapid heart rate, anxiety, fear, difficulty urinating (men only), difficulty sleeping.
  • If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions
  • Tell your doctor if you have: heart problems, liver disease, kidney disease, lung disease, emphysema, high blood pressure, overactive thyroid, diabetes mellitus, glaucoma, difficulty urinating or an enlarged prostate, seizures, allergies (especially drug allergies).
  • Because Guaimist S may cause dizziness, use caution performing tasks requiring alertness and avoid consuming alcohol which can aggravate this effect.
  • Guaimist S should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy.
  • It is not known if Guaimist S appears in breast milk; consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Missed Dose
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered; do not take if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
  • Do not "double-up the dose to catch up.

Drug Interactions
  • Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take, including: sleeping pills, sedatives, tranquilizers, muscle relaxants, medication for depression, high blood pressure drugs.
  • Tell your doctor if you have taken any MAO inhibitors (e.g., furazolidone, linezolid, phenelzine, selegiline, tranylcypromine) in the last two weeks.
  • Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
