Codeine Phosphate is a narcotic pain reliever. It is used to relieve mild to moderate pain.


Storage
  • Store Codeine Phosphate at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from light.
  • Do not store in the bathroom.
  • Keep this and all medications out of the reach of children.


Overdose
  • If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
  • Symptoms of overdose may include cold and clammy skin, slowed breathing, slowed heartbeat, drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, deep sleep, and loss of consciousness.

How To Use
  • Codeine Phosphate is given by injection under the skin or into a vein or muscle by a health care professional.
  • How much and how often you use this will depend on your condition and response.
  • Use Codeine Phosphate exactly as directed by your doctor.
  • Do not increase your dose, use it more frequently or use it for a longer period of time than prescribed because Codeine Phosphate can be habit-forming.
  • Also, if used for an extended period, do not suddenly stop using Codeine Phosphate without your doctor s approval.
  • Over time, Codeine Phosphate may not work as well.
  • Consult your doctor if Codeine Phosphate is not relieving the pain sufficiently.

Side Effects
  • Codeine Phosphate causes drowsiness, dizziness, a floating feeling, headache, nausea, vomiting, constipation, blurred vision, or trouble sleeping.
  • If these effects continue or become severe, inform your doctor.
  • Notify your doctor if you develop: anxiety, hallucinations, a heart rate change, seizures.
  • In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to Codeine Phosphate, seek immediate medical attention.
  • Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing.
  • If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions
  • Before using this, tell your doctor if you have had: head injury, heart disease, lung disease, seizure disorder, breathing disorder, a history of drug dependency, any allergies.
  • Use caution driving or performing tasks requiring alertness since Codeine Phosphate can cause dizziness, drowsiness, and blurred vision.
  • It is recommended to avoid the use of alcohol while using Codeine Phosphate.
  • Codeine Phosphate should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy.
  • Codeine has been shown to possibly cause birth defects in the 1st trimester.
  • Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
  • Codeine Phosphate is excreted into breast milk.
  • Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
  • Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the effects of Codeine Phosphate.
  • Use this with caution.
  • Children should not be given Codeine Phosphate intravenously (IV).

Missed Dose
  • If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember.
  • If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
  • Do not double-up the dose to catch up.

Drug Interactions
  • Tell your doctor of any nonprescription or prescription medication you may take particularly: other narcotic pain relievers, tranquilizers or medication for sleep, medication for anxiety or depression, cimetidine.
  • Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
