Uses
Azopt is used to treat elevated eye (intraocular) pressure in glaucoma (open angle).
Storage
- Store at room temperature between 39 and 86 degrees F (4 to 30 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
Overdose
- If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
- Azopt may be harmful if swallowed.

How To Use
- Azopt is generally used three times daily by placing one drop in the affected eye(s) as directed by your doctor.
- Shake the medication bottle well before use.
- If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying these eye drops.
- You may put them back in, 15 minutes after applying the drops.
- To apply eye drops, wash hands first.
- To avoid contamination, do not touch the dropper tip or let it touch your eye or any other surface.
- For best results, Azopt must be used routinely as directed.
- Continue using it for the full time prescribed.
- Tilt your head back, gaze upward and pull down the lower eyelid to make a pouch.
- Place dropper directly over eye and administer the prescribed number of drops.
- Look downward and gently close your eye for 1 to 2 minutes.
- Place one finger at the corner of the eye near the nose and apply gentle pressure.
- This will prevent the medication from draining away from the eye.
- Try not to blink and do not rub the eye.
- Do not rinse the dropper.
- Replace cap after use.
- If you are using another kind of eye drop, wait at least ten minutes before applying other medications.
- Administer eye drops before eye ointments, to allow the eye drops to enter the eye.
Side Effects
- Blurred vision, tearing; bitter, sour or unusual taste; dry eyes; headache; diarrhea; nausea; and dizziness may occur.
- If these persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly.
- If you notice any of the following serious side effects, stop using Azopt and consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately: eye/eyelid problems (e.g., swelling, pain, redness, or discharge).
- Tell your doctor immediately if you have any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects: stomach pain, dark urine, easy bruising or bleeding, vision changes, persistent sore throat, fever.
- An allergic reaction to Azopt is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs.
- Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
- If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions
- Tell your doctor your medical history, including: any allergies (especially to sulfas drugs), other eye conditions, kidney or liver disease.
- Azopt may make you dizzy or cause blurred vision; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery.
- Azopt should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy.
- Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
- It is not known whether Azopt passes into breast milk.
- Because of the potential risk to the infant, breast-feeding while using Azopt is not recommended.
- Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Missed Dose
- If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember.
- If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
- Do not double the dose to catch up.
Drug Interactions
- Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially: dorzolamide and other glaucoma eye drops, oral carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (e.g., acetazolamide, dichlorphenamide, methazolamide), high-dose salicylates (e.g., aspirin for rheumatoid arthritis).
