Uses
Augmentin Xr is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections.
Storage
- Store at room temperature at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
- Do not store in the bathroom.
- Keep all medicines away from children and pets.
Overdose
- If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
- Symptoms of overdose may include: severe stomach pain, severe vomiting, or persistent diarrhea.

How To Use
- Take Augmentin Xr usually every 12 hours at the start of a meal, or as directed by your doctor.
- Swallow the tablets whole.
- Do not chew or crush the tablets.
- Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level.
- Therefore take Augmentin Xr at evenly spaced intervals.
- Continue to take Augmentin Xr until the full prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a few days.
- Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection.
- Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve in a few days.
Side Effects
- Upset stomach, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting may occur during the first few days as your body adjusts to the medication.
- If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
- Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: easy bruising or bleeding, groin or calf pain, sudden severe headache, chest pain, trouble breathing, unusual decrease in the amount of urine, dark urine, stomach pain, yellowing eyes or skin.
- An allergic reaction to Augmentin Xr is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs.
- Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing.
- If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions
- Augmentin Xr should not be used if you have certain medical conditions.
- Before using Augmentin Xr, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: a history of an allergic reaction to any penicillin, a history of liver problems (e.g., cholestatic jaundice) associated with prior use of amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, severe kidney disease/hemodialysis requirements.
- Before using Augmentin Xr, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: blood disorders (e.g., clotting or bleeding problems), liver disease, other infections (e.g., mononucleosis), any allergies (especially to other antibiotics).
- Use of Augmentin Xr for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush, or a new yeast infection (e.g., oral or vaginal fungal infection).
- Contact your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge or other new symptoms.
- Caution is advised when using Augmentin Xr in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to the effects of Augmentin Xr.
- Augmentin Xr should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy.
- Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
- Augmentin Xr passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant.
- Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Missed Dose
- If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember.
- If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
- Do not double the dose to catch up.
Drug Interactions
- Augmentin Xr should not be used with the following medications because very serious interactions may occur: probenecid, live vaccines.
- If you are currently using any of these medications, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting amoxicillin/clavulanic acid.
- Before using Augmentin Xr, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription products you may use, especially of: allopurinol, blood thinners (e.g., warfarin), methotrexate, tetracyclines.
- Augmentin Xr may decrease the effectiveness of combination-type birth control pills.
- You may need to use an additional form of reliable birth control while using Augmentin Xr.
- Consult your doctor or pharmacist for details.
- This antibiotic may cause false positive results in diabetic urine testing using Clinitest.
- Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
