Uses
Augmentin Xr is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections.


Storage
  • Store at room temperature at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
  • Do not store in the bathroom.
  • Keep all medicines away from children and pets.


Overdose
  • If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
  • Symptoms of overdose may include: severe stomach pain, severe vomiting, or persistent diarrhea.

How To Use
  • Take Augmentin Xr usually every 12 hours at the start of a meal, or as directed by your doctor.
  • Swallow the tablets whole.
  • Do not chew or crush the tablets.
  • Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level.
  • Therefore take Augmentin Xr at evenly spaced intervals.
  • Continue to take Augmentin Xr until the full prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a few days.
  • Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection.
  • Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve in a few days.

Side Effects
  • Upset stomach, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting may occur during the first few days as your body adjusts to the medication.
  • If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: easy bruising or bleeding, groin or calf pain, sudden severe headache, chest pain, trouble breathing, unusual decrease in the amount of urine, dark urine, stomach pain, yellowing eyes or skin.
  • An allergic reaction to Augmentin Xr is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs.
  • Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing.
  • If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions
  • Augmentin Xr should not be used if you have certain medical conditions.
  • Before using Augmentin Xr, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: a history of an allergic reaction to any penicillin, a history of liver problems (e.g., cholestatic jaundice) associated with prior use of amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, severe kidney disease/hemodialysis requirements.
  • Before using Augmentin Xr, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: blood disorders (e.g., clotting or bleeding problems), liver disease, other infections (e.g., mononucleosis), any allergies (especially to other antibiotics).
  • Use of Augmentin Xr for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush, or a new yeast infection (e.g., oral or vaginal fungal infection).
  • Contact your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge or other new symptoms.
  • Caution is advised when using Augmentin Xr in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to the effects of Augmentin Xr.
  • Augmentin Xr should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy.
  • Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
  • Augmentin Xr passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant.
  • Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Missed Dose
  • If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember.
  • If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
  • Do not double the dose to catch up.

Drug Interactions
  • Augmentin Xr should not be used with the following medications because very serious interactions may occur: probenecid, live vaccines.
  • If you are currently using any of these medications, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting amoxicillin/clavulanic acid.
  • Before using Augmentin Xr, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription products you may use, especially of: allopurinol, blood thinners (e.g., warfarin), methotrexate, tetracyclines.
  • Augmentin Xr may decrease the effectiveness of combination-type birth control pills.
  • You may need to use an additional form of reliable birth control while using Augmentin Xr.
  • Consult your doctor or pharmacist for details.
  • This antibiotic may cause false positive results in diabetic urine testing using Clinitest.
  • Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

Side Effects
I usually have diarrhea from antibiotics,and taking such a big dose I was afraid that would happen. So far after being on this for 3 days, my sinus infection symptoms are getting better and no intestinal problems. I do think it is creating a yeast infection, that is my only complaint.

Side Effects
Experienced extreme soreness under rib cage and in the intestinal area after four days on this medication. Discontinued use after five days. Ate yogurt faithfully during treatment.

Side Effects
On day two had explosive watery diarrhea that came without warning. Have continued to have very watery diarrhea but no other apparent side effects yet. I am nursing, and my baby has some loose stools, but so far no explosive episodes like I did. Have had some itching around the bite, but had that before. Now on day 3 of 10

Additional Thoughts
I was aware of the diarrhea and yeast infection side effects before taking it, but was willing to try it to save my leg. I also had a shot of cephalosporin (sp?) antibiotic on day one as well. I was glad to hear about eating yogurt and am definately going to try this. My bite has stopped spreading and the burning and overall itch and discomfort has died down - so if this is because of the Augmentin, I'll deal with the diarrhea. I am going to call my doctor to let him know if it persists for another day, especially after eating yogurt.

Side Effects
I had diarrhea but took a diflucan to prevent yeast infection and the diarrhea stopped immediately. Might be coincidence but thought I should mention it. Now I am having severe muscle cramping in feet, legs and back. Again could be an interaction with other meds or maybe I need to drink more water.

Side Effects
None as of yet, but I have taken this before and expereinced slight diarrera. If you stay hydrated and eat regular amount of yogurt it goes a long way to helping offset the side affects. Also, take the drug exactly as stated with plenty of food. I have had sinus surgery and several bouts with sinus infections. Clearly the best advice is to not get sick in the first place, but without this drug I would be in trouble.

Additional Thoughts
Unless otherwise directed take the full course. If you are on this drug in the first place it must be for a good reason. This is nothing to mess around with and failing to complete the course can result in antibiotic resistent bacteria in your head. I would add that learning about your body is key to managing reoccuring sinus infections. I have found relief in using OTC drugs at key times makes all the difference. If you feel your sinuses swelling and getting congested hit it hard with Ibrofen and a 12hour decongestent (Sudafed). Since using this approach I avoided sinus infections for 2 years until this spring.
