Uses
Fondaparinux is a type of blood thinner medication (heparinoids) used to help prevent the formation of blood clots following hip or knee surgery.


Storage
  • Store at room temperature (77 degrees F or 25 degrees C).
  • Brief storage between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted.


Overdose
  • If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
  • Symptoms of overdose may include: severe bleeding or bruising.

How To Use
  • Learn all preparation and usage instructions in the product package.
  • If any of the information is unclear, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Before injecting each dose, clean the injection site with rubbing alcohol.
  • It is important to change the location of the injection site daily to avoid bleeding under the skin (e.g., hematomas).
  • Inject Arixtra under the skin (subcutaneously/SQ) usually once daily; or as directed by your doctor.
  • Do not inject Arixtra into a muscle (IM).
  • The dosage and length of treatment is based on your medical condition and response to therapy.
  • Do not interchange Arixtra with other forms of blood thinner medications (e.g., heparin, other heparinoids, or low- molecular weight heparins).
  • Doing so may lead to bleeding problems.
  • Before using, check this product visually for particles or discoloration.
  • If either is present, do not use the liquid.
  • Learn how to store and discard needles and medical supplies safely.
  • Consult your pharmacist.

Side Effects
  • Minor bleeding, injection site reactions (e.g., rash, itching, irritation, hematoma), nausea, vomiting, headache, or diarrhea may occur.
  • If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: unusual or severe bleeding or bruising, vision problems, one-sided weakness, slurred speech, confusion, swelling, fever, unusual tiredness/fatigue, black stools, yellowing eyes or skin, dizziness.
  • If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions
  • Arixtra is not recommended for use if you have the following medical conditions: severe kidney disease, low body weight (less than 50kg/110lbs), active bleeding, certain heart infections (e.g., bacterial endocarditis).
  • Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: kidney problems, bleeding/blood disorders (e.g., thrombocytopenia), stomach problems (e.g., ulcers), stroke, eye problems (e.g., diabetic retinopathy), severe high blood pressure, recent surgeries (especially brain, spinal, or eye surgery), any allergies.
  • Caution is advised when using Arixtra in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to the effects of Arixtra.
  • Arixtra should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy.
  • Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
  • It is not known if Arixtra passes into breast milk.
  • Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Missed Dose
  • If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember.
  • If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
  • Do not double the dose to catch up.

Drug Interactions
  • Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially: anti-platelet drugs (e.g., aspirin, clopidogrel, ticlopidine), NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen), other blood thinners (e.g., alteplase, heparin, warfarin), mifepristone.
  • Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
