This solution is used to provide nutrition to patients who are unable to eat in the usual way due to illness or surgery. Amino acids are used by the body as a source of protein and nitrogen. Protein in your diet is important for keeping a healthy body weight, preventing muscle loss, keeping your cells working well, helping with tissue growth and repair, and providing energy. Amino acids are usually given into a vein as part of a solution that also contains other nutritional ingredients such as dextrose (a form of sugar to provide calories and energy), vitamins, minerals, and sometimes fat emulsion.
