This medication is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections (e.g., gonorrhea).This antibiotic only treats bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (e.g., common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or overuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.

Uses
This medication is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections (e.g., gonorrhea).This antibiotic only treats bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (e.g., common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or overuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.
Notes
  • This medication will only treat gonorrhea.
  • To treat other possible infections (e.g., chlamydia), it is important to take all other medication as prescribed.
  • Your sex partner should be treated as well.
  • Consult your doctor or pharmacist for ways to avoid sexually transmitted diseases, including the use of latex condoms.Laboratory and/or medical tests may be performed to monitor for side effects and response to treatment.

Storage
  • Store at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 to 25 degrees C) away from light and moisture.After mixing in the correct IV fluids (consult your pharmacist for details), the drug is stable at room temperature for 24 hours.
  • Discard any unused liquid.


How To Use
  • Follow all instructions for proper mixing with the correct IV fluids.
  • If you have any questions regarding the use of this medication, consult your pharmacist.After mixing, the injection will appear as a suspension (cloudy particles in solution).
  • Before using, shake the vial well and check this product visually for any unusual particles or discoloration.
  • If either is present, do not use the liquid.Inject this medication deep into the muscle (deep IM) of the buttocks area of the body as directed by your doctor.
  • The dosage and length of treatment is based on your medical condition and response to therapy.Learn how to store and discard needles and medical supplies safely.

Side Effects
  • Nausea, rash, headache, itching, or pain/redness at the injection site may occur.
  • If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly.Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.
  • Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: fever, chills, trouble sleeping, vomiting, dizziness.An allergic reaction to this medication is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs.
  • Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, trouble breathing.If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions
  • Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: throat infections, exposure to syphilis, any allergies.A preservative (benzyl alcohol) which may be found in this product or in the liquid used to mix this product (diluent) can infrequently cause serious problems (sometimes death), if given in large amounts (more than 100 mg/kg daily) to an infant during the first months of life (neonatal period).
  • The risk is also greater with low birth weight infants.
  • Symptoms include sudden gasping, low blood pressure, or a very slow heartbeat.
  • Report these symptoms to the doctor immediately should they occur.
  • If possible, a preservative-free product should be used when treating neonates.Tell your doctor if you are pregnant before using this medication.It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk.
  • Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Missed Dose
  • If you miss a dose, contact your doctor immediately to establish a new dosing schedule.

Drug Interactions
  • Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially: "blood thinners" (e.g., warfarin or heparins).Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
