Tinidazole Uses Tinidazole is an anti-infective drug which is used to treat certain types of parasite infections. It stops the parasite from living in your body.The manufacturer does not recommend using this medication in children younger than 3 years of age. Notes Do not share this medication with others.Treatment of certain infections (trichomoniasis) may require that sexual partners be treated as well to avoid reinfection. During therapy, refrain from sexual intercourse or use a condom.This medication has been prescribed for your current condition only. Do not use it later for another infection unless told to do so by your doctor. A different medication may be necessary in those cases.Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.g., liver function tests, blood counts) should be performed if you receive multiple courses of treatment to monitor your progress or check for side effects. Consult your doctor for more details. Storage Store at room temperature (68-77 degrees F or 20-25 degrees C) away from heat, light and moisture. Brief storage between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) is permitted. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.Discard any unused liquid suspension after 7 days. How To Use Take this medication by mouth, usually once daily with food, or as directed by your doctor. The dose is based on your medical condition, body weight, and response to therapy.For children taking this drug in liquid suspension form, shake the bottle well before each dose.Tinidazole works best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level. Take the medication at the same time each day if you are taking this drug for more than one day.Continue to take this medication until the full-prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow the parasite to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection.Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens. Side Effects Bitter/metallic taste in the mouth, nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, stomach cramps/pain, loss of appetite, constipation, diarrhea, weakness, fatigue, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, and joint pain/stiffness may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.This drug may cause your urine to darken in color. This is not harmful.Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: unsteadiness, fast/pounding heartbeat.Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: easy bruising/bleeding, mental/mood changes (e.g., confusion, depression), signs of a new infection (e.g., fever, persistent sore throat).This drug may rarely cause nervous system problems. If you notice any of the following unlikely but very serious side effects, seek immediate medical attention: seizures, numbness/tingling of the hands or feet.Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush or a new vaginal yeast infection (oral or vaginal fungal infection). Contact your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, a furry tongue, a change in vaginal discharge or other new symptoms.A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Precautions Before taking tinidazole, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to metronidazole; or if you have any other allergies.Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: blood disorders, brain or nervous system disorders, untreated fungal/yeast infection, liver disease, seizures.Avoid alcoholic beverages and products with propylene glycol while taking this medication and for at least 3 days after your last dose because severe stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, headaches and flushing may occur. Consult your pharmacist for further information.This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery.Tinidazole must not be used during the first 3 months of pregnancy. If you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. Tinidazole should be used only when clearly needed during the last 6 months of pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.This drug passes into breast milk and could have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Breast-feeding is not recommended while using this drug and for at least 3 days after finishing this medicine. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. Missed Dose If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up. Drug Interactions Your healthcare professionals (e.g., doctor or pharmacist) may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for it. Do not start, stop or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.This drug should not be used with the following medication (including if taken within the past 2 weeks) because very serious interactions may occur: disulfiram.If you are currently using the medication listed above, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting tinidazole.Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: "blood thinners" (e.g., warfarin), cholestyramine, cyclosporine, fluorouracil, lithium, oxytetracycline, phenobarbital, phenytoin, fosphenytoin, tacrolimus, drugs affecting liver enzymes that remove tinidazole from your body (such as azole antifungals-including ketoconazole, macrolide antibiotics-including erythromycin, cimetidine, rifamycins-including rifabutin, St. John's wort, certain anti-seizure medicines-including carbamazepine).Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you also take drugs that cause drowsiness such as: certain antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine), anti-anxiety drugs (e.g., diazepam), medicine for sleep (e.g., sedatives), muscle relaxants, narcotic pain relievers (e.g., codeine), psychiatric medicines (e.g., phenothiazines such as chlorpromazine or tricyclics such as amitriptyline), tranquilizers.Check the labels on all your medicines (e.g., cough-and-cold products) because they may contain drowsiness-causing ingredients. Ask your pharmacist about the safe use of those products.Also, report the use of drugs which might increase seizure risk (decrease seizure threshold) when combined with tinidazole such as isoniazid (INH), phenothiazines (e.g., thioridazine), theophylline or tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline) among others. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for details.This medication may decrease the effectiveness of combination-type birth control pills. This can result in pregnancy. You may need to use an additional form of reliable birth control while using this medication. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for details.This drug may affect the results of certain laboratory tests (e.g., liver enzymes, triglycerides). Make sure laboratory personnel and your doctors know you use this drug.
